Try some ibuprofen (motrin, advil) or tylenol. As someone else said, DON'T put aspirin and hold it in your mouth, it won't kill the tooth...but aspirin is actually an acid that will burn the soft tissue surrounding your tooth. DO NOT apply heat, as this will cause any infection (if present) to spread. A cool cloth or an icepack wrapped in cloth might help resolve some types of pain. If it's completely unbearable, call or go to an emergency room in the area. The types of topical (applied to the surface/skin) creams and gels won't do much for the pain as most likely the pain is coming from inside the tooth, not the outside. Get to a dentist as soon as possible!

Swish with warm salty water frequently. This won't help with the pain, but it will help keep it clean. At least until the weekday. If you can afford to hit the pharmacy or drug store, ask them what they carry for tooth pain. I know there are gels out there for temporary relief, but I can't think of the name for the life of me!! Sorry. Is is Anbesol? (Or did I mess that up with cold sore gel?) For the no insurance issue, do a google search for your area vocational dental schools. I work at a vocational school and we are always looking for patients to "practice". The students are supervised and you will get looked at by a real dentist too. (The worst thing about doing this, is that is can often take a long time. The student will do the procedure, the instructor will check their work, the dentist comes over and checks it all at the end and will give a consultation. But it's free if you have the time.)

Try taking an aspirin or tylenol. If there's a drugstore open near you, there's a product called Anbesol that is made for temporary relief of toothaches. You might try that.
DON'T try the old wives cure of putting an aspirin directly on the tooth. DON'T DO THIS - YOU CAN KILL THE TOOTH, AND YOU'LL END UP HAVING TO HAVE IT PULLED, OR ELSE GET A ROOT CANAL.

A toothpick dipped in oil of cloves and touched to the tooth is a great numbing aid. It will get rid of the pain but he still has an infection there that needs work by a dentist.
