I'm about to turn 40 years old and I am debating if I should take a chance on joining the army. I have a 3 year old at home but the wife could handle things better with me half way around the world. I don't need to make a lot of money but need to have life insurance if I go. Any knowledge on what the army gives you if you die in combat? Also any other pitfalls. How long would i have to sign up for. I have a masters degree in telecommunications and I am in fair physical shape.

That retarted kid is wrong. You can get in the Army at 40 but for active duty, im pretty sure you have to be in before your 41st birthday. If your only eligible for Reserves, you can still try that and maybe even try to go active after a year, since you will already be in the Army then it will be easier. Also, you don't have to do a combat job, at your age you may not even be able to keep up with the rigorous infantry life. Pick an MOS that won't see combat, unless thats what you want.

You could try to become a officer with that kind of a degree. The pay is better then you might think. I forgot just where but it is considered public info so you can look up "military pay" in google and accually find all the different pay rates and such. enlisted pay is E-* officer pay is O-* You can get life insurance for very cheap money in the military and even when you leave the military you can go with whats called VGLI which is some of the cheapest life insurance around. If you truly wish to have correct and accurate info on benefits in the event of death go to VA.GOV this will also tell you benefits available after service. You would also have free healthcare for your family so that might save you and your wife some money there also. I dont know if just starting a military career at 40 is a great idea but if you can do it and you desire to do it and it will benefit you and your family then well best of luck to you. Be sure to check out the officer program.

Not sure of the age but with that degree you could enter as an Officer. You have to ask yourself all the questions that others will ask of you. Those of possibly going to Iraq and not coming home.
I served 22 years in Army communications and it wasn't a bad life. But I retired at 42, you have to serve 3 or 4 years active and then in th inactive reserve to make up a total 8 year commitment.
Search your own heart, and If you join up, then my salute to you. if you decide against it then God bless you just for thinking of it.

LAST I KNEW THE CUT OFF WAS 40, BUT I THINK THEY RAISED IT. AND TO THE CHICK WHO SAID IT WOULD BE STUPID AND YOU WOULD LEAVE YOUR FAMILY, SHE DOES NOT KNOW..... THE ARMY MAY BE ROUGH ON YOU BUT THEY DO TAKE CARE OF THE FAMILIES. YOU GET PAID ENOUGH MONEY FOR YOUR FAMILY GET FULL BENEFITS FOR YOUR FAMILY AND A COLLEGE FUND FOR YOU OR YOUR CHILD....THE LIFE INSURANCE IF YOUR DEPLOYED WITH THE MAX RATE WHICH IS ONLY $29 A MONTH YOUR FAMILY WOULD GET $400,000. YOU COULD COME IN AS COMMO, A SHAM JOB.... THE RISK OF DEPLOYING IS GETTING LOWER, THEY ARE STARTING TO CLOSE DOWN BASES IN IRAQ.....AND IF YOU DID IT IS NOT THAT BAD... AND THE MONEY IS GREAT

. It sounds like you've been spending the last 15 years of your life saying "I wish I would have joined the Army" but didn't because you couldn't make the necessary commitment and now you regret it.
