I have been a NASCAR fan all of my life. I have seen Cale Yarborough and the older drivers bring the sport to what it was. Yes, the ratings are down, but attendance at the track is down also. There was a time when races were sold out long before the actual race date. Now, show up right before the race and pick up some tickets. Now NASCAR is all about the money. NASCAR has turned into WCW. What happened to "the best car, pit crew, and driver winning a race. NASCAR is becoming "politically correct". There new mantra is to make everyone the "same". COT is a major downfall. Put a Ford, Dodge, or Chevy side by side and you can't tell the difference. Why should the manufacturers even put their names on the cars any longers. As for safety, it keeps the cars bunched up, so when there is a wreck it involes 10 to 15 cars multiplying the chance for someone to get injure. Any death is tragic, but NASCAR had less injuries than football without COT. How many footballs games can you watch without a player being injured. Very few. Most NASCAR drivers walk away unscathed after most races.
As for Toyoto. This is the National Stock Car Association, not the "International Stock Car Association". Rename the sport or start another racing league. This was an American sport. Keep it American

It may not be dying, but it's BOOOOOORING! It is so lopsided that I don't watch anymore, and I was a fan since 1985. There are 41 other drivers on the track besides 24 & 48. I'm sick of the Hendrick love fest by the announcers. But I'm sure that's what Nascar has dictated to the networks. The fastest 43 in the qualifying should race, and if a driver crashes in qualifying, too bad. A couple years ago, Nascar had to go out and find "field fillers"! Now we have more racers than spaces. It would make the points more interesting also if it was just points for placing, nothing extra for leading laps, etc. Just points 43 for a win, 42 for second, etc. And keep the cup drivers out of the Busch series for Pete's sake. Either you're in the big league or you're not.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

The cars ceased to be 'stock' a long time ago, and the acronym 'NASCAR' has been obsolete for a long time too. So one might say that NASCAR has been dead for a long time. They made a lot of the changes for safety reasons, to stop drivers from dying in flaming wrecks (Glenn 'Fireball' Roberts is a good example-died because of a fiery wreck ironically) The sport is evolving, as it must do to stay alive in a changing world. You might say NASCAR is a teenager-past its infancy but not fully grown yet. Perhaps they should get real and call it something else, that way you know up front what you're getting.

...The same thing happened back in the mid 1960's when Bill France made some rules against the Chrysler corporation when they came out with a very powerful engine (the 426 hemi).
...Richard Petty and David Pearson were two of the biggest stars of the times. They sat part of a season out because of the rule change.
...Because of the decline in fans and loss of sales Nascar was basically forced to allow the 426 hemi which in turn brought back Petty and Pearson and also brought back the fan interest.
...Today Nascar is basically going through the same thing. Once again it will take a loss of fans/money to open the eyes of the France family. I think it will pick back up again once they open their eyes to the interests of the fans again.
...I am from the south and I have nothing against anyone from the north, east, or west. I will not even enter an argument about the subject. There are some trouble makers starting all of the stereotypes about Nascar fans (ole Marko).

It absolutely is. Maybe not as far as the sport as a whole, but the fans are getting disgusted. Myself included. The Chase is the worst thing that ever could have happened to NASCAR. Case in point, this year. It appears as though Gordon will be cheated out of yet another championship because of the Chase (the first in 2004 when Kurt Busch won). If the system was good enough for Petty and Earnhardt, then why did they have to change it? For ratings? Give me a break. I don't care who the driver is, be it Gordon, Johnson, Jr., Busch(s), Harvick, Stewart, etc., if you dominate for 26 races, you shouldn't lose the Championship because someone wants to fill their pockets a little more. I have nothing against Jimmie Johnson, but this is not his championship, although it seems as though he will be the one with the crown in two weeks. If that is the case, I am completely through with NASCAR forever.

Good Question. And I think in part, it has alot to do with the politics behind the scenes, in other words $$$$$$.
But that's how it is with every sport. Remember the good old days when we only watched Figure Ice Skating during the Olympics? Now it's "Professional" and boy have they gotten things down and dirty. And now it's so commercialized it's lost some of the beauty and elegance it was known for. Same is happening now as NASCAR was known in the good old days as a rough and tumble kinda sport with lots of, "who built themselves the better engine" talk and bumping and banging and thrilling hold your breath finishes. Now it's about Everybody must look and run the same and flippen green/white/checker finishes.
The 2nd part is the broadcasting. I strongly believe once we get back to FOX/TNT the ratings will go up. Everyone complains about DW when he's on the air but I love him and I'll take him over Rusty any day!! I absolutley love NASCAR day and everyone knows not to count on us showing up for any events (Unless it's a special occassion) because we watch the race every week, but even I have fallen asleep more times than I'd like to admit because the ESPN/ABC broadcasters sound like my 88 year old high school history teacher, Mrs Wilbur!!!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
So I'll be glad when this season is over and I'm looking forward to the Daytona 500, Jr in the 88 car and DW leading us to the start with Boogity Boogity Boogity Let's Go Racing Boys!!!

I been going to nascar races for over 40 years.Still got hundreds of ticket stubs to prove it.2007 was 1st year I can remember not attending a what they call Nextel race.Currently I have no plans for any 2008 Nextel races, either.I'm as disappointed as I have ever been in NASCAR.I read a lot of blogs from the Lazy-Boy fans who park themselves in front of a TV who act like NASCAR's biggest fans when they have never even been to a NASCAR race. There's tons of things wrong with NASCAR now days so I'm not even going to start but I just have to respond to CaliforniaLove's comments. If NASCAR wants to leave the southeast and it's "redneck roots" and seek diversity in other areas, then that's OK with me.But just remember,CaliforniaLove,it's those "rednecks" that BUILT and PAID for nascar all these years. So as far as I'm concerned, let the California fans(all 10 of you) keep up NASCAR and pay their bills in the future.Oh yeah,if you want to know the future of California Speedway, just look for Riverside Raceway or Ontario Motor Speedway.

NASCAR it's self is not dying but the fans of the SPORT are tired of the politics that are being played.
NASCAR has put "free rides" to teams. They put in to place this top 35 in owners points and provisionals so select teams can and will be in the race each week and this blows. The fastest 43 race.It is this type politics that is lossing fans and causing hard feelings toward teams and NASCAR.
So is NASCAR dying nobut if the powers in NASCAR don't open their eyes and ears their fan base will drop.

Aside from the fact that a lot of nascar fans are nothing more than uneducated louts , the deal with toyota did it for me . I work with a LOT of nascar fans , and they didn't need much convincing . About half have stopped watching . Toyota might be making some of their junk over here but "NEWSFLASH" people---- THEY ARE A FOREIGN COMPANY.I refuse to support people and country's that HATE THE U.S. And believe me - EVERYONE ON THE PLANET HATES US . 5 years ago NASCAR RULED sports programming. Now they don't draw the viewers that basketball does. PATHETIC .So go ahead with your globalization plans , nascar. You alienate the lifelong fans in the process.
