This is the nature of the dog. They use to be used for killing rats, and would also be put down animal burrows so that the prey would come out and end up in nets. My Jack Russell book said to never leave them alone with cats.

I have a Jack Russell rat terrier cross that is afraid of mice and ran into the other room when I showed her one that was caught in a mouse trap. Last month we had a large turkey fall into the outdoor kennel that she was in, and she ended up hurting him so badly that he died that night. I hope that she was only playing with the turkey, but you never can tell with the Jack Russell breed.

When the show, THE MASK, was shown, many people ended up buying a Jack Russell. Because not everyone knows that you have to be very firm with the Jack Russell and let them know that you are the alpha leader, many of these dogs ended up at animal shelters.

Your dog will always be more hyper then another breed, such as a pug, and will need lots of exercise. See if she will play "fetch" with you.

For the shedding problem, we have it with the pugs. We ended up getting throws for the furniture the same color as them. Some dogs will also let you vacuum the loose hair off of them. A daily brushing helps somewhat.

The only calm JRT is a tired one. And a walk won't tire them out. You have to let them run. About the shedding, try giving them brewers yeast tablets. You can get them at Walmart, Petsmart, or any pet store. It will make their coat softer, shinier, and will reduce shedding. Good luck. My JRT is about 7 years old and is finally calming down. He still has the occaisional bouts of insanity though.

I don't own a Jack russell but my father-inlaw does and it's the most hyper dog i've ever seen. Take it to a obedience class.

Brush every day. I brush mine and it is never a problem for me.

Mine loves tennis balls. I throw one for her every day for about an hour. She also has an Italian Greyhound friend who runs her ragged so she is pretty tired most of the time. It's the IG that I have trouble wearing out.
