About 2 weeks ago, my laptop and my cell phone were stolen from our back room at work. I was on the clock at the time. The suspect rifled through my bag as well as a fellow employee's, a portable hard-drive was stolen from his. I filed a police report and pretty much got a "That sucks" from the owner, and that was it. I feel like I should get some sort of compensation from him because:
a. There is no proper place to store our bags, they either sit in the break room or behind one of the counters (all which are easily accessible to non-employees).
b. There is no door to the back room, merely a movable screen with a sign that says "STAFF ONLY".
c. We aren't supposed to allow non-employees into the back room, but the manager does anyway, in fact he allowed a friend of his and a father and his boy back there to use the bathroom during the time period when our stuff was taken.

Thank you. Any help at all would be appreciated.

You can sue the manager civilly.
He will probably fire you if you do, and then you can also sue the company you worked for for wrongful termination.
No guarantees that you will win, but those are your rights.

Laptops & cellphones not used n the course of the business day should have been kept in your locked car. How is it your manager is supposed to be responsible for something you brought in that you did not need for work?
