Give more details. Was there any lumps on their faces or bodies? Was their necks twisted up when you found them dead? Was there a discharge from their noses? Did you hear sneezing in the hen house? Did they stop eating before they died? You can find this out by feeling their crops. This in located on their necks, in front where their chests starts.

Did they get some bad feed? Was the food moldy? Did you get a new bird that could be a carrier of some disease? Did they have problems walking?

Is the yellow around their faces filled with pus? If this is the case, they have one of those chicken diseases. I need more details so I can look it up in my chicken book. The 4-H center or the Agriculture office in your town would know what to do. Call the city building to get their phone number.

It is normal for hens combs to gradually fade after they have been laying eggs for awhile. Only laying hens will have the dark red combs. When the days get shorter, the hens might stop laying. They need at least 14 hours a day of light to stimulate their pituitary gland to get them to lay again.

Sounds like they're sick. Take them to a vet to get the proper medication.
