The "best" protection is to keep the images too small for anyone else to get much use out of them. It's the risk you take when you post images to a public forum.

For my online illustration portfolio, I feature a series of "thumbnail" images that are JUST large enough to identify what they are. A click on the thumbnail will link them to a "detail" of a larger image. Again, this detail shows, just a small portion of the full image, just enough to show technique, or brush strokes. One more step is that I do not offer the url of the portfolio to anyone. This address is what I give to art directors or potential clients, ONLY!

Digital watermarks are available, but this doen't prevent unauthorized copying. I'd have to spend a lot of time SEARCHING for the watermark I.D. just to find out who's using the images. Then I'd have to take the time and efffort to hunt them down and kill their puppies. (and who has time for THAT?)

You really can't stop copying... There are methods of placing a copyright image in your picture and/or imbedding a copyright in the file itself. I suggest an obvious copyright image personally...
