Muzzleloaders, from matchlocks & flintlocks, to caplocks, were all effective throughout their history to be able to feed literally MILLIONS of people, before the invention of the breech-loader and the cartridge-loading weapon systems. . .

. . . and they are STILL 'bringing home the meat' TODAY!
I myself just this last week had an excellent dinner of venison steak & ribs, FAR superior to 'store-bought' beef or pork, with all its' pharmaceutical & hormonal contamination! !
Inside 150yds, the longest shot I would consider attempting when hunting with a 'front-stuffer', my .50 T/C Hawken is just as accurate as a modern cartridge rifle, whether I'm shooting patched round-balls, conical slugs or, my favorite, the Lee REAL (Rifle Engraved At Loading) bullets, ALL of which I hand-cast myself with LEE or RCBS molds.

A .50 cal muzzleloader is extremely effective. Because of the velocities that are achieved using todays muzzleloaders used with pyrodex or triple 7 powder, and conical bullets, the internal organs where the bullet passes through are pretty much turned to mush. Usually intantly killing the deer.

I have been hunting only 3 years with a muzzleloader (36 years overall) and have gotten 4 deer, all have dropped in their tracks. What more can I say.

I have been hunting with mine for 5 years, and had to shoot the deer a second time only once. That was my fault, not the guns, as I jerked the trigger. I like power-belt bullets and my rifle shoots them into 2 inches at 100 yards all day with american pioneer powder.

Put it this way, the 1st time I shot a deer with mine I had 150 grains of pyrodex in it and the deer's chest was liquefied.

If anything, they might be more effective because of all their knockdown power. With today's technology, accuracy is also top-notch.
