I cannot believe you even asked this question. Hmmm...wonder how all those cigarette butts got on the ground...your family was not acting as responsible citizens by messing up a public place. They will all probably die of lung cancer anyway from so much smoking. The butts didn't just "magically disappear". Someone who also broke the law did "community service" to work off their jail sentence and cleaned up the park. Maybe that should have been or will be your family someday. Think about everything you do, how it will impact yourself, other people, and the environment we all have to live in. Be a responsible individual, even if your family is not a good role model for you, rise above your lot in life.

First of all, if a million other people think throwing a cigarette butt is not bad, then the ground would be covered in them (like it is now). Secondly, Not all of the cigarette decomposes, when the cigarettes rain washes the butts in the drains, lacs, oceans, etc., it pollutes the water and can kill the animals living in it.

Because (1) a small cigarette butt can cause a big fire; (2) small cigarette butts tend to congregate with tens or hundreds of other small cigarette butts; (c) depending upon the size of your family reunion, it took a government employee possibly half an hour to an hour to clean up your cigarette butts.

WRONG!! some city worker getting paid $25/hr probably had to pick up the mess. Your family should be billed for the clean-up.
Now to answer your question why it's wrong..... I don't suppose that it ever occured to you that tossing a lit cigarette butt could start a fire?
Maybe the kid in California who started the fire there didn't think there was anything wrong with playing with matches.
I almost forgot.... public parks are for the enjoyment of all. I would be right pissed of if my kid came from playing in the park and had nicotine stains on his clothes instead of grass stains. Maybe this concept would become clearer to you if all the dog owners in your neighbourhood had their pets poo on your front lawn (why not? it's biodegradable).

Unless the rain washed them away, they were picked up by someone.
A cigarette butt on the ground is litter. It takes quite awhile for nature to make them go away.
The worst part of throwing a cigarette on the ground, is that it can start a fire. In dry parts of the country, it can start a very large fire and cause a lot of damage, injuries and even deaths.

I wish city workers were getting paid $25 an hour to pick up trash, I would quit my job and apply for a city job pronto. One of the reasons that someone else has to pick up after your family is that tobacco is a poison and it kills grass and many other things as mentioned in the other answers. Not to mention the part that was in the persons mouth can contain bacteria and spread what ever disease that person had. If a whole family is doing this, the kids will see nothing wrong with it as you do. Imagine what our country would be if everyone felt that way. It would be under mountains of trash and we would all be living in a smelly junk pile, 3rd world country dump.

If anything eats the cigarette butt, they will be harmed. Also, think of it this way: If every person in the United States dropped one cigarrette butt on the ground, the ground would be covered, and if any animal or child would pick it up and eat it, they could die. Also, it's littering.

It is bad to throw a small cigarette butt on the ground because if you don't put it out it could cause a fire.

They all add up in the end. Just think of all the cigarettes smoked in the world daily and then visualize a the pile their butts would make. Those butts probably ended up in a lake or something of that sort close by.

The cigarette butts were gone because somebody cleaned them up...throwing anything on the ground is littering and can cost you more than just bad Karma...in some places littering fines are as high as $1000...that is more than my rent!
