Always shoot for the lungs. The heart is small and on the bottom front side right behind the front legs. The surest easiest shot is a lung shot, because the lungs on a deer are large and take up nearly 1/4 of the front half of a deer.

Best place to shoot them is next to your truck so you don't have to drag them as far.

Black powder rifles are very accurate today, with the in lines and really good bullets. If your using a scoped rifle, take the broadside heart/lung shot, Head on I would take a shot trying to hit the windpipe and heart.
My father-in-law always took the neck shot whenever it was presented as a broadside shot. His logic was that the neck pivot up and down only so far and that the shot will hit only a few inches high or low if the animal lifts or lowers its head. And if the animal moves you will strike the chest cavity as a deer will usually only move forward unless confronted by something in front of it. He perfected his shooting in Iran during WWII getting camp meat for his unit stationed in Tehran. And after hunting with him for years, I only saw him miss one deer. So use this advise as you see fit.

Same as any other time. Heart/lung if you can't do a head shot, or want the head for some strange reason.
