but blacks can use it like it was an adjective. dont give me any crap either, its either offensive or its not. Dont even try the weak *** argument that its a cultural phrase because thats just bullsh*t. and anybody with any sense knows and recognizes that fact. I'll give you the answer.... it is because its a catch phrase to implicate "other than black" people as bigots.

Because black people find it offensive when it's said by white people. Seriously, after all the crap they've put up with through the years being slaves of the white people and all, being called the "N" word continuously by the white people enslaving them, do you think they really want to hear it from white people? But it's okay if they use it because they ARE black. It's just that you can't experience the racial issues like they do (or did in the past). I know that the current generation hasn't experienced slavery or anything but they feel as if racial discrimination is still an issue (which, sadly, still may be true) and they're told stories of this. I'm not sure if I'm making sense here... it's like this:
I have asian friends and they're always teasing each other by joking that they're nerdy, they have small penises, etc... and it's okay when they say it to each other because they ARE asian and know that all the stereotypes aren't true. But when a non-asian says that to them, it's an insult because how would a non-asian know if the stereotype was true or not?
Or how about this:
I have hispanic friends who always tease each other with names and stereotypes, but as soon as a non-hispanic repeats the same thing, they get offended.
I'm not sure if you got my point or not but I hope you do get it and NEVER say that to a black person, or in reference.
If this sounds racist to anyone, trust me, I am not. I'm just trying to explain to someone why people take offense.

I am white, and don't use the word because I find it offensive.

I noticed that where I live, mostly blacks use offensive language casually, and loud in public. I find it offensive to hear blacks call eachother the N word, as well as "M F-er" (refering to anyone and everyone).

BTW - I am not a racist, biggot, or whatever. I am just saying what I think about it all.

They can't use it because it is a racist term regardless of how you feel about it.

It's for the same reason if you call a homosexual a "fag" you're being a bigot, but if a homosexual calls another homosexual a "fag" then they can get away with it.

Bigotry and racism applies to all, but any term relating to you or your race can be used by you or your race. For example, the term "gaijin" in Japan has a rather negative connotation and while I'm reasonably comfortable if a non-Japanese refers to him/her/myself as such I really don't like it when a Japanese person uses the term. If they use the proper term of "gaikokujin" instead then I'm fine with it.

Why would any decent white person want to use it? why are so many people up in arms?

Don't use it. Don't worry about how/if black people use it. Mind your own business; there are plenty of bigger issues facing us all.
