I'm attend the Hero Holiday trip to the Dominican Republic next summer (it's a volunteer program which includes building schools, going to orphanages etc). Anyone have any good ways that I could fundraise to buy extra gifts for the locals?

Think of the gifts you want to carry to the people. Go to stores that sell that sort of thing, and ask for a direct in-kind donation.
Get some photos from the sponsor org, and make Support Posters to give to the merchants who help you. Don't offer to trade poster for stuff, but any who give you something should receive a photo - the work crew, the happy recipient - mounted on a posterpaper with "Thanks to Johns Shop. Your donation will make a difference in 2008." And the name of the Hero Holiday organization.
This kind of public thanks is important to store owners who survive on goodwill.

Visit businesses and tell them whats going on, have a cook out or car wash, be sure and check on how you are going to get the gifts over there, gettting thru airports now isn't so easy. Good luck!!!

My soccer crew is making plans to throw a Halloween social gathering/pageant to develop funds. yet that's going to be on Oct. twenty ninth. Bake revenues and candy bag revenues continually do rather nicely in my college. rather once you sell to the inexperienced persons who are not allowed to bypass away college for lunch yet.

Tell every person you can about your trip and what you plan to do with the money you raise. I'll bet they will want to be involved. Many people want to do something special to help someone but, don't know where to start.

I suspect you're in the US, but here in the UK we might raise funds with a boot sale.
(Just out of interest, we did similar to Ghana where the schools were screaming out for footballs.)
