Don't do it in a letter.

You can try the following as a template, where something appears in [ ] you can substitute items or drop the item altogether if it doesn't work. One thing you must do is be explicit, however, you definitely need to say "I am breaking up with you" so he doesn't misunderstand it. And you also need to be clear that any intimacy (if you had any is over).

This presumes you were intimate with him; if you're rejecting a guy you never boinked, then you will want to say something to the effect of "Unfortunately we were never able to be intimate, and in view of the circumstances I will never be able to have sex with you."

The tone may be a little more humorous than you like, but I think this might get you started on the idea of what to say:

Dear John, I am deeply troubled and sorry to have to tell you that we can no longer [ see each other / have sex / be boyfriend/girlfriend / be friends with benefits / whatever else you have for a relationship].

I have decided that I can no longer continue the relationship with you, because [unfortunately, / fortunately, ] [you're lousy in bed / I have taken up a relationship with a dildo and it's better than you are / your brother is better in bed / you have treated me unkindly / I am moving to Uzbekistan and don't want a long-distance relationship / I don't want to follow you to Kathmandu, Nepal / some other reason].

I want you to understand that [this is not a personal reflection upon you / I'm sorry that it is a personal reflection upon you / this is my fault] and I hope you will understand.

[Unfortunately I can no longer / I still wish to] remain friends with you [, even though we will still be able to see each other / and we won't be able to see each other anymore.] But the relationship we had can no longer continue.

[I want to offer you the following information about what was wrong, because you will probably wonder, so that you can understand and not make the same mistake with the next woman you meet. You might try not smoking marijuana in court, or offering joints to the officer when we have to visit the police station.]

I have given you this information to explain to you why I am breaking up with you. Please do not beg me to take you back or continue the relationship, and respect my wishes in this matter.

[I will always think of what we had with love and tenderness / I will always think about how what you did to me caused me to have tenderness / I wish I could feel tenderness about what has happened].

Mary

The best rejection letters are those who contain the absolute truth...Because cut and dry is the best way to put it,,,That way you don't leave them hanging on with the hope of a future false truth which will only continue to hurt you both Let that person know you true true feelings...Sounds like you may not really even know what they are because when someone is done they are done no questions ask....

99 times out of 100 rejection is down to looks and 99 times out of 100 the person whos rejecting can't express that it is a matter of looks. Be honest. There's no such thing as letting someone down gently. If someone is not attractive then nothing you can say will change the fact that nobody wants them.

I am not looking for a relationship at this time.

You found someone more qualified for the job.

You don't feel that connection that you think you should have and continueing in a romantic way would be unfair to that other person.

You prefer not to ruin a perfectly good relationship with weirdness if you break-up.

You are a lovely person; so lovely that I think of you as a grandfather/father/brother/mother/sister etc. Naturally, we will continue to be friends. I just don't want to have a romantic relationship with someone who feels like a relative. I know you'll understand. You've always been so sensitive.

"I'm gay."

He won't take it so personally in that case, because it's something about you, not him.

And after all everyone is supposed to be a bit gay, so it's not even a lie...

But then, it might get around that you're gay, which is a bummer if you aren't...

But I definitely believe it's the best one. It means that his ego won't be threatened, which is what the pain of rejection is usually about.

Rejection letters are for the wimpy. Go up to him in person and tell him that it's not working for you anymore and that you hope he'll find happiness.

Don't reject someone in a letter, do it face to face.
