Why did God murder Onan for refusing to have SEX with his sister in law??

Murder is never justified- maybe they rewrote it because SHE refused sex with Onan but the men were too embarrassed about what really happened?

God did not MURDER Onan, He killed him as PUNISHMENT for Onan's sin. Onan refused to have sex with his sister-in-law... don't ASK me WHY... but he did... and it was his "duty" to do so and have "seed" (children) by the sister-in-law. So he sinned against the command of God (in this case) by refusing to do his "duty"... and in those days, it was in the manner of "caring for" not just having SEX with them! "Onan, though he consented to marry the widow, yet, to the great abuse of his own body, of the wife that he had married, and of the memory of his brother that was gone, he refused to raise up seed unto his brother, as he was in duty bound."

The SECOND reason, and more importantly, God had promised that the Messiah would come down from the house of JUDAH, Onan's father. Since the first-born son, Er, was also killed for HIS wickness and sin (thusly, the widow was married to Onan), the family lineage then passes through the second son, Onan. Since Onan refused to have children with Er's widow, there would then be no lineage through which the Messiah would come out of Judah's lineage.

After Onan's death, the widow was to be passed onto Er. But Er was too young, so the widow went back to stay with Judah as a widow. So HOW, then could a Messiah come from Judah when 2 of his 3 sons were dead and the 3rd too young?

But just to reiterate... God did not MURDER (kill with foresight and intent), but PUNISHED by taking Onan's life. God is the author of life, He can GIVE it and He has EVERY RIGHT to TAKE it.

It does not say that he refused to have sex with her. It says that he DID have sex with her, but he always "pulled it out." He didn't want her to have a child. The child would have taken Onan's place as heir to the dead brother, Er.

So God punished him for his selfishness.

The point wasn't because he refused to get physical with her, but simple disobedience coupled with insult to injury, spilling his semen on the ground - a feeble illustration would be more like willingly breaking a bottle of Givenchy for no reason.
