I see this question is already answered...but honestly, I lived an hour away from Indianapolis for 17 years of my life, and I had never heard the term until the Colts/Pats game on Sunday. So, it must not be too common of a nickname...I usually call it Indy, and some people might occasionally call it the Circle City due to the war memorial in the center of town with a...well, circular road around it...go figure.

Its called Nap town because its short for indianapolis has nothing to do with Indiana ,people from Gary,In dont say NAP . Randy Daytona is way off ,you normally hear it from the urban inner city and its mostly black . Most white people live on the out side of indiaNAPolis like Carmel, Fishers,or Beachgrove witch is not cosidered indianaNAPolis. Lived here my whole life NAPtown hoe

Randy, I grew up exactly 20 miles north of 'Nap' town Circle (you figure it out if you are smart enough!) or Indy as many of us called it. I am definitely not 'white trash'. It was coined by a Jazz musician and the name stuck. Partly because back then there wasn't much to do in the city.

The correct answer is already here. It's the "nap" in Indianapolis.
A better comparison with Chicago would be to the other nickname, Chi-town.
Besides, Chicago is actually about the fourth windiest U.S. city.

because ''nap'' is in the name IndiaNAPolis. It has nothing to do with being sleepy or boring. A blues musician coined the nickname.
Wikipedia used to have the explanation on it, but when i checked, it had been taken off
