You are right to be suspicious of the puppy in the window. They come from puppy mills.

A pet store is never a good place to get a puppy. I recommend you look into a responsible and reputable breeder. Yes, they may look well-cared for and very cute in the window, but have you done research and found where those cute little puppies come from?

Horrible puppy mills force dogs to churn out litter after litter in small, cramped cages. Those dogs are forced to live in their own business and are rarely, if ever, given any human contact. Once those puppies are born, they are ripped away from mom and litter mates too early. They are given to pet stores to sell or get shipped off to unsuspecting buyers looking for a healthy puppy. This business breeds dogs purely for profit, and do not care whether the breeding stock is within breed standards/is healthy/ have a good temperament/etc. or not. They will breed any dog to make money.

This is NOT something to be supporting, and the best way for you to help these helpless dogs and puppies is to not buy from a pet store, educate yourself and educate everyone you know.

Looking for a responsible and reputable breeder will give you a healthy puppy and someone who will take back the puppy anytime throughout it's life if needed. You'll know EXACTLY what you are getting because a responsible breeder breeds to better the breed and not just to make money. In fact, with the expenses of showing their dogs, completing genetic testings, making sure a breeding is successful, etc, they make little, if any, money doing what they do. They do it because they love their dogs and want to make a difference. They do it to improve the breed and to see it get better in time. They will not put their puppies in a pet store and will not give their puppies up to just anyone. These are the people you want to get a puppy from.

First of all never and I mean never buy from a petstore! YOu ahve no idea where these puppies come from and if they have been inbred or what kinda diseases they have. More than likely you will get the puppy home and it will end of with parvo even after they tell you that it has had its shots and blah blah blah just to sell you a puppy! Why would you spend a lot of money on a puppy to end up putting even more than normal vet care as it is sick to begin with. Use your internet and do some research on breeders in your area and call and visit with them. A good breeder will be happy to show you the parents and where the puppies are born and hopefully it is a clean kennel and the dogs are alert and active. If they tell you they have had their shots ask for the vet records or some sort of accounting of what was given and when. Most breeders will worm them and give first shots and let you know what htey ahve been eating and all that. Do your homework and go from there.

Please don't buy a puppy from a puppy store. One you don't know where they come from and if you did you wouldn't by from the breeder b/c more than likely the babies came from a puppy mill.

All you have to do is do an internet search for the dog you want and it will direct you to a site to a breeder. you can go and see your puppy and the parents and meet and talk w/ the people. So many more advantages to meeting a breeder than picking a puppy from a window.

No, NO, NO NEVER, EVER buy a puppy from a pet store. They come from puppy millers. No responsible breeder would ever sell their puppies to a pet store, no matter what the pet store tried to tell you. Go to this link and you can see where these puppies come from and how their parents are treated.

If you buy one another one will take it's place, thus a neverending cycle and the poor parents .... The only way to stop this is never to buy a pup from a petstore, never to buy anything from a petstore that sells puppies.
