I see what you are saying, but......I think most of us feel that if you were to move here, then learn the language. If you were on a vacation here, or something like that, then it would be different.
Just like if I were to move to Mexico, Spain, or South America, I would try my best to learn Spanish.

I worked at a job a while back where about 7 or 8 guys were Mexican, illegal workers, and didn't speak any english. How am I supposed to communicate with them other than familiar sounding words to them or sign language type of communication? It made it very difficult for anyone at the company to communicate with them, and consequently, alot of things ended up getting messed because we all couldn't talk with each other. I speak only a little bit of Spanish, it's not very good, but it helps once in a while.
Yes, more American's should learn spanish, or at least a second language, but our schools usually don't require more than 2-3 years of it, and if we really never get to use what we learned, then it becomes lost knowledge.

Yes, when Americans go live in Mexico they should learn Spanish, just as when Mexicans come live in America they should learn English.

If I move to a Spanish speaking nation I would definitely learn to speak Spanish and try to assimilate into their society, as is I live in an English speaking nation and its the immigrants job to assimilate to the country in which they choose to live NOT the other way around.

I speak 2 other languages aside from English so I do not think it would be difficult to learn Spanish but the language that I choose to study is my choice, not at the demand of immigrants.

Because I already speak 3 different languages and I don't feel like learning another one just so one group can get around learning this countries language.

You came here....learn English. If I went to Mexico they'd be demanding I learn Spanish...and they would have every right to do that. Thing is....I'm not living there.....I'm not vacationing there.....I have no need what-so-ever to learn it except for a bunch of hard headed people who refuse to learn this countries language.

Americans CAN learn Spanish. Many of them do. There is no reason for those of us who don't want to learn it to have to do so. After all, we're not the guests here, are we?

And don't BS me with your ill informed brain washed pseudo-histories. Even if they were all true, that was then - this is now. Don't even go there! We all now know that even my so called Native American ancestors were once immigrants to this land. We've ALL been immigrants at one time or another.

We don't OWE you anything! LEGAL immigrants are welcome to participate in the process of becomming citizens of the USA. WELCOME! Legal guest workers are welcome. But, no trespassing.

Lots of things are difficult to deal with. Babies with cancer. Crooked polititians. Drug smugglers. Illegal immigrants. Sick "men of the cloth". Arrogant people who won't learn the language. For examples. But, we deal with them.

Most of my ancestors had to learn English. We learned that if I come to work and/or live in a foriegn country then it is my responsibility to learn that country's language and customs.

My blood is English, Croatian, Native American and Irish. Each one pure. And TOGETHER they made the USA.

When things got tough here, they didn't run. They didn't blame their situation on any one else. They stood and fought for their country. And at one time or another they ALL fought for everyone else on this planet as well.

And, that's the deal with a democratic nation. The citizens of the USA are the ones that get to decide what happens in America. Not illegal aliens. We paid for that right with our blood!

TRESPASSERS WILL BE PERSECUTED! That's what we've decided.

Most of the arguments I hear from the invaders from the south are phony to the core. They can't cut it in the real world they were brought up in - and come from. And they obviously don't have the guts to stand and fight for their own freedom in their own country. So they come up here to a more civilized world and try to make US pay for their own cowardice and lack of backbone at home.

You try to make it OUR fault that you have no life, no money and no freedom. Cheap shot. Pathetic excuses. Shame on you!

Listen, I'm all for standing up for illegal aliens and what not, but this is ridiculous! No we shouldn't have to learn Spanish, because this is AMERICA not Mexico. If I were to be going to Mexico you're right, I would learn to speak Spanish because its common courtesy. But that should be one of the standards to come to America, learn English before you come, or when you get here take English classes. Mexicans get to learn English for free, but yet we have to pay to learn Spanish. Now that's bull crap. If my job required me to learn Spanish I would. But not because you guys are too lazy to learn it. Now my husband is Mexican, so I'm not racist at all, but I made him take more English classes than he already had, because I didn't want that racial finger pointed at us, as if we don't have enough. His aunt won't even take the time to learn English and that drives me nuts, I have no respect for her in that aspect.

No. I think more Spanish speakers should learn basic English to report crimes. In Mesa, AZ the police have a hard time communicating and many times the perpetrator gets away because Spanish speakers refuse to know basic English..at least..and the police or EMT's have to wait to get the information..

In the long run taxpayers are going to shell out more for interpreters because some won't learn English.
