I work for a software company in the IT Field. I have 27 tattoos and I don't need to hide them. 4 or more are always exposed depending on the clothes I am wearing.
Our receptionist has a tattoo across her chest and on her hand that are always visible.
We have several other people with 1-2 tattoos -- they include executives, sales persons, marketing and finance employees.
If you try hard enough -- you can find employers that are accepting of tattoos and piercings.
I know that a lot of people need to cover their ink while on the job, but that is just something that I can no longer do. I shouldn't need to have 2 images in order to be accepted in the workplace.

I'm an office administrator in a website design boutique. I have 8 tattoos, three which are highly visible almost everyday, one covers my forearm (elbow to wrist) and 2 on my upper chest. Noone has ever said anything about it. Actually I usually get a "is that new?" from coworkers and i've been there for 8 months and have had them the whole time! Our company has some of the biggest clients in the country, and when they come in, they always mention how much the like my tats.
Another guy in the office has tattoos pretty much completely from the waist up, and he has his lip and tongue pierced, clients don't care that he has all the visible tattoos. As long as we are doing a good job and pleasing them as clients, they don't care. I find that in the IT industry it is more accepted, because there are alot of artists (website designers) and it's all an expression of art.

Manager in a retail store. Here we all have face piercings and visible tattoos. I have visible tattoos, nose piercing, and a 2g lobe. I have not had any trouble with my employer in the past 3 years. They are not going to fire me for something so stupid when it's hard as hell to find someone to last longer than 3 months. In the same retail store in a upper class neighborhood it's not allowed at all.
In finding a different job is becomes very difficult. No matter what is on the resume or what you say it's your appearance they want. Sadly.

i have tattoos on my arms and legs which are visable if i wear a skirt or sleeves that do not come right down to my wrist. i worked in an office (not customer facing) and they were fine with it.
generally speaking if you are going to be facing customers then having tattoos and piercings on show isnt a good idea. you are the face of the company when that customer sees you and a lot of people think tattoos are tacky and ugly. however...if the company employ you and know you have tatts etc and dont say well if you work for us we want them covered etc and later on get funny they cant start having a go at you.

I'm a stay at home mom for a while, but I was a bartender, a waitress, a piercer....In these jobs, no one cared.
Now, i have been in medical records and patient registration at a hospital, too. I was required to take out all my visible piercings (ears and nose) and wear long sleeves and long pants at all times. Very hard in the summer.....Eventually, they started a dress code that made us wear scrubs all the time so that made it easier. If you get visible tattoos and piercings you have to expect resistance from the outside world. people are uncomfortable with them. Period. You just have to either deal with the restrictions they put on you or get a job where no one cares. :)

I am a carer. My tattoo is only visible in the summer when I wear short sleeves. Some of the old folks I care for have tatts. Never had a problem.

I have visible tattoos and I used to do accounting work for a Fortune 500 company. I even switched jobs with said tattoos with no problems. Of course, working as an account coordinator meant not dealing with the public. But I never had any problem in my field with them.

hey, i used to work in a bakery and i had my tragus, nose and tongue pierced and they told me to take them all out, i never did and never got any grief about it.
I dont work at the moment but i have a large tattoo on my leg that will probably cause me some grief if I manage to get a job where i have to wear a skirt or shorts. But in my opinion i wouldnt want to work somewhere that didnt want me because of my tattoo's or peircings, i look at it like this, if i had a huge scar on my face or some visible part of my body would they not want to hire me because of that also??
People are getting more accepting of tattoos and peircings these days which is good.
I heard a good saying once
"tattooed people dont give a **** about people with no tattoos, so why should people with tattoos give a **** about people with tattoos"
Good saying!!

My husband has many tattoos and he works in the building industry mind you he covers them up by wearing a long sleeved shirt when he first meets a new client. He tells me that when his clients first catch a glimpse of them, like if they come on site when he's working, the majority are very shocked, but more inquisitive than judgemental. Although I do think it's doubtful that they would employ him to do work on their property unless he looked the part. I think that's the main thing to consider when getting a tattoo, make sure that you leave your hands, face and neck untouched

If you work face to face with customers, it can be a problem, my hubby is a manager and has asked his staff to cover up arms with long sleeves if they are seeing customers on a particular day, otherwise hes not worried about it.
I think on the whole, if you are going fo a white collar job, its looks unprofessional and can posibly stop you from getting a job if they are highly visible. Facial piercings are a big turn off for employers too.
if you are going for a blue collar job, I dont think its a problem very much at all.
