I was thinking about something today. My life's dream job is to one day own my own campground. The only problem is, I know this would be something you can't make very much money at, so it seems kind of useless to even consider it. Should I try to consider going for this someday down the road anyhow? I grew up in Boy Scouts just about my whole life, and I always enjoyed being out at camp. There is an old Scout camp nearby me that I always go to and help out with stuff and have the time of my life, even though I'm not being paid for it. There is nothing I'd love more than to have my own campground someday, but is it a worthwhile thing to get into, or is it a bankrupcy waiting to happen?

Hello Driver4x:

You might consider managing a campground, rather than being an owner. this way you can see how much work it is, and if the lifestyle is what you really want to do.

You might want to register with the US office of Personnel Management http://www.opm.gov/ and sign up for campground management jobs. You should also do this for specific states where you wish to work.

Sounds like fun.

Set yourself a goal and a date ... is this a 10 year goal or a 3 year goal?
What do need for that goal?
- Steady source of customers (Scouts, schools, ...)
- respectable name in that industry
- Location
- Building and maintainence know-how
- reliable and affordable staff
- out of school holidays, have corporate conventions or bootcamps for middle managers to push their limits

the bankrupcy fear would happen if you are undercapitalised ... so work out suplimentry income sources (rental properties or whatever). Build up a good credit rating now - have a savings fund that you can prove you are puttting something into each paycheck.

It is very do-able. But many businesses fail in their first year or 3. So the more you do now, the easier it will be when you own your own campsite

Go for your dream job if you think you going to stick at it.

I made great money back in the 80s and every day seemed like a week

why not own a trailer park. trailer owners have to pay rent for the space, right?

Or you can develop a camp ground with buildings and rent it to schools for biology & geography trips. Schools would pay well for a good clean place for the kids.

The lodge linked below is an example - I went to this camp for my high school trips.

definitely go for your dream job, if you succeed, you could end up making that extra money you could have gotten at another job. anyway its not always about the money, the best things in life arent things. make sure your hours fit you schedule comfortably and that your partners and bosses are at leat mediocre. also, if you get a job just because you want more money, you wont end up liking it for long and you could get fired and/or quit your job and have nowhere to go. so my advice is to follow your dreams and see where it goes.

I don't know; it depends on the market and how profitable it would be. Research it online and with credible people
