I am looking for a good rifle caliber to use at the range. I am looking for something that is going to be accurate over medium to long distances, not kick my shoulder off, and be cheap and easy to get ammo.

This is an easy one-----you want .22LR (.22 Long Rifle). 500 bullets cost $15 and the recoil is practically zero. If you wanna do alot of shooting without spending alot of money go with a .22LR.

You did not mention the exact ranges you plan on shooting.* How far away?* The 22-250 is a good choice out to 400 yards plus.* The standard 308 caliber is very common.* The 30-06 has a proven reputation.* The longest shots in combat were at 1500 yards using a 308 caliber Rifle> Two (2)* shots two (2)* dead.*....

It would be nice to know what you consider long range and what kind of budget you're talking about, as well as whether you're paper-punching just for the heck of it or have something more specific in mind. And I'm assuming you aren't putting together your own cartridges but want to buy factory loads in bulk. If we knew more specifically, our caliber recommendations might be completely different, but I'd venture a guess that 223 Remington is probably your best bet, possibly with a fast-twist barrel for the heavier bullets if you're planning to shoot over 250 yards a fair amount.

For inexpensive shooting you can't beat the .22 LR a brick(500rds) will set you back around $10

The best compromise for your specifications of >Medium to long range, minimum recoil and inexpensive< would be the .223 Remington(5.56mm)

Once you move into center fire, higher velocity calibers, there isn't much to offer in the way of "cheap" , although the cheapest would probably be .223 ammo.
If you just want to target shoot at < 100 yd , get a .22 rimfire and shoot away!

you could use a 223 that gets you to about 500-600 yards
or you could use a 308 and that will get you to 800-1000 yards but anything past 800 is really hard to do with a 308

A smaller caliber will be good for you like a .243 or a 25-06..... ammo is very cheap and both of these caliber at grains of 115 are great flat shooting guns..... easily shoot 300 meters like it is nothing..... I would take a 25-06.

I use an old 8mm 1941 military German Mauser and have a great time with it. That's a bit hefty of a caliber though. My son just bought a Savage .270, and that was extremely fast and straight shooting up to 250 yards. That's about the extent of my experience.

.22 LR and .17 HMR come to mind first. Maybe .22 WMR.

A bolt-action .22LR with a long barrel or a .223 are great choices that will not hurt your wallet or your shoulder. Just be careful cleaning that barrel (small diameters can be tricky and cause costly "Dooohs!").
