My yr old doxie broke her leg about 2 weeks ago. This is her second splint. I am taking her to the anyway tomorrow to get her splint taken off andher leg xrayed. The last time she got her splint replaced, the vet warned us that it was getting too wet and so he closed it off at the bottom, covering it as part of the splint. (From shoulder to bottom. We would cover it with a plastic garbage bag too)

We came home on Friday to find she had chewed off the bottom of her cast so the pad of her foot was exposed. We tried to cover it as best we could, and she has an e-collar on, but if shes unattended for any amt of time, she licks at it. It had a strange odor this morning and I checked it, it is red, swollen. Looks puffy and sore. And she keeps licking. Ive covered it with a sock to distract her. The pads look puffy like a teddy bear paw. And it smells damp.

Can I wait until tomorrow (monday) morning first thing to get her to a vet or should I rush her to emergency now? Or what can I do now?

And I feel awful about it. I really did my best to keep it clean and dry. She was quiet, resting, she had an e-collar on and wasnt (I thought) in any danger of it getting ruined. But out of nowhere one day, maybe it was itching or something and she was trying to get at it, she found a way to lick and chew and that was the end of it.

There is an emergency vet nearby which should be open for a few more hours but on a late Sunday afternoon/evening, Im not sure if anyone will be there. I just dont know what to do. I want to help her now but I dont know how.

Prevention is going to be your answer AFTER you go back to the Vet and have this taken care of - Obviously there is infection - If your dog is able to lick even with the e-collar on - then the collar is too small -

Since I can't see your dog's paw, it's hard to comment on a yes or no for taking her to the emergency vet. It's probably infected now and she'll need an antibiotic. If it were my dog I'd look at her paw to see how bad I thought it was, was she acting sick, was she running a temperature, etc. and act accordingly. I have a tendency to think it's better safe than sorry but the emergency vet's charges are prohibitively high and I've only used them once in what I thought was definitely an emergency.

first off if you put a plastic bag over a splint the leg sweats and hence the leg gets wet. take your dog back to the vet now. if it smells then it may be infected and if it is puffy then your dog has been moving on it to much and it has made the leg swell and the splint is too tight.
you need to keep the dog confined while it has the splint on to minimise the movement

hi Liv, I quite have been there mate many circumstances, if he's no longer in any soreness eating and eating conveniently i dont think of you're able to have any probs jointly with your infant. there is different controversy whilst it is composed of giving canines bones. I.E. some say cooked bones could splinter and get caught interior the throat or some say that bones that are no longer cooked are fantastic. i think of all in all its all the way down to success. save a watch on hm for twenty-four hours if he stops eating, eating or having an disillusioned tummy then call and make an appointment at your community vets. i'm hoping this facilitates and robust success jointly with your infant. If it's red, swollen, and smells bad these are tell-tail signs of infection. Do not wait, it probably hurts. Take her in as soon as possible.
