we just purchased a grandfather clock.not a really expensive one but still its really nice (it takes batteries) We put it together and it wont work. We have read and reread the instruction book. What can we do to fix it ourselves?!?!?! Someone we knew said it could be the maganism. but i dont know what that is lol

It would have helped if you included a few details like model and source, but ...
Grandfather clocks use a pendulum to control the release of energy. If your clock is not just an electronic clock in a box with a pendulum hanging below it, but actually uses the battery to power the mechanism like a spring powered the old ones, then you have to set the pendulum swinging - it won't start on its own. It keeps on swinging because each time it swings, it releases some energy to move the clock hands and gets a little boost from the ratchet mechanism.
If that doesn't work, you have to get someone to look at it.
