Is there a some special significance behind these characters or is it just a fad? Someone told me people just don't want others to know what they have tattooed on themselves but I don't believe that.

fyi: oriental is a food, asian would refer to the people.

are you talking about anime characters? or actual asian writing "characters"
if you mean the anime, it's just what's in style right now

if you are talking about the writing style... who knows. most of the tattoos that people have that "say" something really don't say what they think it does, if it says anything at all.

i personally think it comes from a lack of creativity. and instead of having the english word "hope" they'd rather get a symbol, regardless of if it really says what they want it do.
whatever, it's their body to make look however they want it to.

Its the whole Eastern mystique! Mystery, honor, courage, the history, the folklore, etc. It's great. We Westerners don't have stuff like that. So we copy it. That's what we do.....

Note: I knew this really cool guy once who thought he got the word "courage" in Chinese on his bicep. It ended up being something like "table" or "chair" or something kitchen-related like that.....It was hilarious!
