when will the U.S. and its states increase the required skill level a person needs to get and keep a drivers licence? On a scale from 1 to 10, I feel the average driver falls between 3 and 5,with a few around 7 or 8. thats not good enough in my opinion. There are more people who die or are badly injured than guns and drugs. Its right up there with cancer and were trying to cure that.So when are we going help the people young and old with poor driving skills? What do YOU think should be done?

I've often complained to my friends and co-workers about how easy it is to get a NYS driver's license. 20 multiple choice questions that a chimp can pass and a few turns through the neighborhood and BAM! you get to drive. I have a class B CDL. If people had to take that test to get their license, the roads would be EMPTY. The knowledge required to operate a commercial vehicle would frighten most people. Say what you want about truckers, but I find that the majority of OTR truckers and bus drivers are the most courteous people on the road.

The first two posters got it right, the only thing I can add to it, is to voluntarily take a Defensive Driving Course. I say it that way because when you're mandated by a judge to take the class, you'll be resentful and not open to learning. Taking it just to learn to be a "better" driver you'll absorb more from your instructor (as well as getting a discount on your car insurance - in NY anyway).

Adjust your Attitude

The most important actions you can take to avoid aggressive driving takes place inside your head. By changing your approach to driving, you can make every trip more pleasant. Forget Winning.

For too many motorists, driving becomes a contest. Are you one of those drivers who allows the shortest possible time for a trip and then races the clock?

If something happens to slow you down do you get angry? The solution: Allow more time for your trip. You'll be amazed at how much more relaxed you feel when you have a few extra minutes. Instead of trying to "make good time," try to "make time good."

Put Yourself in the Other Driver's Shoes - Instead of judging the other driver, try to imagine why he or she is driving that way.

Someone speeding and constantly changing lanes may be a volunteer firefighter, or a physician rushing to a hospital. Someone who jerks from one lane to another may have a bee in the car, or a crying baby.

Whatever their reason, it has nothing to do with you. Stay cool and don't take other drivers' actions personally. Be a cautious and courteous driver.

Signal every time you merge or change lanes, and whenever you turn. Use your horn rarely, if ever. If you and another driver see a parking space at the same time, let that person have it. And if another driver seems eager to get in front of you, say "Be my guest."

The first thing to know is to know your car. Know how quick it accelerates, stops and turns. Part of the problem in this day is that people rely on the high-tech crash avoidance gizmos. Things like traction control aren't necessary if you know your car and know how to control it. To quote Ryosuke Takahashi in Initial D "Even when ABS is working at its best, it can be outperformed by the right foot of a talented driver."

Besides, Driver's Ed doesn't teach you how to control a car that's about to spin out, especially when you can't "rioght" the car imediately. For that, you'd have to either practice a lot (away from traffic/pedestrians/etc) or go to a SCCA racing school like Skip Barber.
