Grampa has candy in his pocket. The paper that's around it wants to make a big noise when we unwrap it. Do you think we should eat candy in church?

Thanks, that brought back a memory for me. My grandma used to put chocolate kisses in her sweater pocket and bring them to church for me. She was probably trying to get me to behave by doing that, but I just thought she did it cuz she loved me.

As a Catholic, who is not a Eucharistic minister. -- I don't know what the rule is. Don't think it matters much. But I agree that one should not treat them like ordinary bread. That is why we are suppose to bow our heads before we receive the Host, as a sign of respect. But not attending that particular church where the Priest is doing this.. I can not pass judgement. Perhaps it is just a space issue. They are a small parish and have but the one Ciborium.. I don't know. Though there are rules for most things... You have to realize that some Priests are not aware of them OR, may forget and fall back to what makes sense to them. Anotherwards, not all priests follow the rules perfectly for one reason or another. I am not excusing them or saying that is OK, but admitting reality. For this reason, we don't follow and worship them men..but the truth that the Church teaches. The Eucharist is not holy because of what they do, or don't do.. but because of the truth that Christ taught us. He may be wrong to do that. -- And if you observe that... then you should let his Bishop know. But I can't condemn him, because I don't know all the circumstances or know what he knows. Perhaps he was never taught that this was wrong. I can't say for sure. If it bothers you.. send a letter or email to the Bishop and let him shepherd his flock... the Parishes under his control. That is his job. He can not be everywhere at once, so if you tell him of a mistake in his Dioceses, it is his job to fix it.

Chances are Grandpa has dry mouth. This occurs often to older people because of all their medications. Inwrap the candy before going to church and place in a small container. (Make sure the container doesn't make noise when opening & closing). Candy to moisten the mouth is okay (best is lemon drops). Candy just to eat as a snack in church is wrong. Your time in church is for prayer, reflecting and learning, not entertainment like a movie, tv show or sports event.

Hi sweetie,
I always eat candy in church. if the paper is really noisy I unwrap it slow, or wait until the Church get noisy, I also take cookies to Church, and i like oatmeal cookie because I can put them in my pocket without them getting my pocket messy, but Auntie like for me to put stuff in a sandwich bag and leave the top open, it doesn't make noise that way.
when our kids were little we always took cookie to Church for them. that was the only way we could keep cousin Mandy quiet.

never you mind dear one. You go ahead and eat a candy or two in church. You can unwrap it first before you go in, or I like squeezy's answer..... unwrap it behind your back or under your coat so it doesn't make noise.... OH and remember how I told you to sing with the angels as loud as you want... Jesus loves you no matter what.

Perhaps you should go to the restroom and put as much in your mouth as would fit, and then go back, lease you wont be disturbing others with the noise of unwrapping. sing with Chocolate teeth:)

I think it's OK as long as you don't go out of your way to crunch down on it just as (assuming you're in a Catholic church) they're doing the "body of Christ" thing with the wafers.

For example:

"Body of Chr ist..."

: )
It can be distracting, so place it behind your back when opening it.
My dad taught that trick to me when I was little.
