On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit the coast of Louisiana and Mississippi. The hurricane pushed a tidal surge, topping a measured 30 feet in some areas. Orleans Parish, consisting of the Lakeview area and the lower 9th Ward areas, and all of St. Bernard Parish were hit the hardest. Almost the entire city was engulfed in water, leaving the majority of it crippled. Just about every home, if not every home in the St. Bernard area was destroyed. 2 years later, the city has not recovered, Lakeview and Chalmette are coming back slowly, and the lower 9th ward is almost non-existent.

The following link is great. I contains several other links to photographs of the storm, the devestation and recovery efforts. They will amaze you, if you have not seen this before.

This is a photograph of the surge itself. It is listed on Snops, and it is genuine. This surge came in over Chalmette, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. There are several different versions of where it actually came in, but this is the actual photo of the surge that covered St. Bernard Parish.

Like everyone else has said, there was no Tsunami. Maybe you were just speaking figuratively. At any rate,I was hit hard. New Orleans East (where I live), Chalmete (a parish outside of the New Orleans), Slidell (another parish outside of New Orleans...a little further than Chelmatte), the infamous 9th ward, Gentilly (close to New Orleans East) and Lakeview certainly bared the grunt of the storm. Uptown and Downtown New Orleans seemed to be spared for the most part, but not completely.

India was the one who was hit by a tsunami, I do believe.

New Orleans was just hit by a category five hurricane.

I can't recall correctly, but I think the tsunami was in '04 and the hurricane was '05, but I'm really not sure :/

I know the hurricane was in late August/early September, and the tsunami was either right before Christmas, or right after.

None.
New Orleans was hit by a hurricane a few years ago that nearly wiped the city from the face of the earth.
