Ist of all,if your not mixing the mud with a little water ,your just spinning your wheels You need to get a drywall paddle and a drill and mix a little water with the mud untill it is smooth with no bubbles. Most homeowners just open a bucket and dig in.WRONG! Trust me you will see a huge difference in workability and the amount of sanding having to be done. Just copy and paste this on youtube.com (How To Coat Drywall www.drywallschool.com). Notice how smooth the mud is and how he uses each side of the knife to "cut" in or feather in edges? The sad part is it will only take him 30 seconds to sand that whole seam. There are many other videos on youtube for drywall repairs. Good luck.

This is really a practiced art. Most of us have tried it and found we haven't the experience to do it right. Hire the pro first before you ruin the walls. The area my husband tried in our basement had to be completely re-done by the pro. This is definitely an area that is not a DIY fix.

I have the same problem. I found using a large wet sponge works very well.

Just use the sponge as you would sandpaper.

I also found that using a wider putty knife helped.
