Well the reserves are just that reserves. You will do the one weekend a month two weeks a year and basic training. They will pay for your schooling, however health benifits you will only get when you are on active duty or on your weekend. If you dont want to go to war then I dont recommend going into the reserves or any part of the military. But I guess it also depends on what service you plan on joining. I am also 22 but spent the 4 years in the military its something that you should think long and hard about. It will be the next few years of your life doing.

Joining the reserves means you do basic training and schooling like any other military member. Then you serve one weekend a month and 2 continous weeks a year for training.
The reserves do not pay for schooling or health benefits (unless you get the GI Bill for the schooling) There are different programs, but they are all limited.
Many reserve units are called up for the war. There is no way to determine if you would go or not.
Your best bet is to talk to people who are in the reserves at this moment. That DOES NOT include a recruiter who will tell you all the good and none of the bad to get you to sign on that line.
If you really want to join and not go to war then you need to try and find a branch and a job you qualify for that is not needed in the war zone...but good luck with that. They are even sending over admin people.
If you want full benefits and schooling paid for and less of a chance of going to war, join up active duty. You contribute to the GI Bill for when you get out, you can use the Tuition Assistance while you are in (they pay 75% I believe) and you have full benefits.

A military reserve force is a military organization composed of part-time military personnel, and sometimes civilians, who are available to fight when a nation mobilizes for total war or to defend against invasion. Reserve forces are generally not considered part of a permanent standing body of armed forces. The existence of reserve forces allows a nation to reduce its peacetime military expenditures while maintaining a force prepared for war.
There can be great opportunity for you there, BUT if you are called to war you have to go. Chances are, they will not put you on the front lines. But you never know. Nor do you know how long they might send you away to assist in any military conflict in any capacity.
Our military is overextended now and they have had to call on the military reserves and the national guard for this war in Iraq and Afghanistan. If we go to war with Iran, or anyone else, I would put money on the fact that you will be called up for some type of duty.
Make sure that this is what you want and are willing to do. You can get a good education out of it, which is very useful. But, at what price? That is up to you to decide.

OK as a former SGT in the Army ler me tell you the differance.
Active militarry is just that, every day, go where ever you are needed.
Reserve- is mostly non-combat jobs but support jobs. meaning positions that fill jobs that support the combat soldiers.
Guard- well thats the true bottom of the stick. they are mostly combat jobs but they work for the state and country when needed.
Bottom line it just depends on the branch of the military where you go or what you do. Job slection makes a big difference too. If you and get a hospital type job, not a combat medic, hospital work. you stand little chances of going to Iraq. But bottom line your *** belongs to Uncle Sam.
Little known fact, no matter how long you sign up for 2,3,4,5,6, years. when you complete your term in service you still belong to the IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve) for 8 years from your enlistment date. meaning you can be recalled at any time if needed.
SO look into the jobs offered, Active duty has the most benifits. Also if your close to the coast line look into the Coast Guard. but they too do some overseas work.
I was in your shoes once. Just went active Duty. Go big or go home.

Don't join the army if you don't want to be shipped off to war. That is what the military is sister.
You could just get a job and try to stay healthy until you can finish school and get a good job or meet and marry someone worth marrying who has a job and insurance.

My husband is a reservist and it is guaranteed that you will go to war. If you still want to join...let me say that there is nothing worse than someone who doesn't have your back. If u know you don't want to go to war than don't go and risk the lives of others because you made a foolish decision.
As far as school it will be awhile before you will be able to go to school. Do your research before you sign on the dotted line. And just FYI recruiters are know bullshi__ers. They make promises they have no control or authority over.

of course you know that "reserves" is still military not just sort of. when they need more troops in a conflict the "reserves" are called in and you will be expected to fight or do whatever your trained for. its still serious business even though your not a full time soldier. basically from what i know the military has your balls in a death grip from the second you sign yourself over so be careful with that decision.

Don't join the military if you don't want to go to war. We are at war and you would most likely deploy. I am a reservist and have deployed twice now.

First off, if you don't want to go into war, DON'T JOIN THE MILITARY... wtf do you think the military does?? DO NOT join the military for the wrong reasons...do it to serve your country, not for personal reasons. And give me a break, I joined when I was 18 and I went to Iraq. You're not a GIRL, you're a WOMAN and plenty of women go to war. For your own sake, don't join unless you have the balls to go to war and die for what you believe in. Talk to a recruiter before doing anything!!!

Hey, I don't want to seem like a smart ***, but if you don't want to go to war, then don't join the military. The government offers these insentives..(college tuition, $$$ bonuses, etc ), and they offer them for a reason! Because you might be risking your life!
My advice is: Don't join the military for the free stuff. Join because you want to defend your country.
