Catholic priests are comparing illegal immigrants to Oklahoma's early settlers in a new twist to arguments against deporting the illegals to Mexico and other countries. After all, the priests said, the original "Sooners" broke the rules when they slipped into the state early to claim free land on April 22, 1889, ahead of the "Boomers," who stayed at the border until signaled The Rev. Michael Chapman and the Rev. Don Wolf evoked Oklahoma history as they spoke to hundreds of mostly Hispanic legal and illegal immigrants who gathered at the Capitol on Thursday to protest the immigration law's implementation. The acts of the Sooners were civil matters, just as illegal immigrants are defying civil law by entering the country without papers. The penalty is deportation.
Wolf said both the Oklahoma settlers and the mostly Hispanic illegal immigrants of today had in common a quest for "economic freedom." http://www.koco.com/news/14504968/detail.html

I just roll my eyes at the utter stupidity of bringing up history (but usually in a revisionist way) to try and excuse illegal criminal activity in 2007.
Our ancestors also crawled around on all fours and ate with their hands....so that means we should eschew the fork and knife in 2007, right?
It's just ANOTHER ploy to avoid discussing the reality of this situation today .
It is just plain so lame it needs a walker to get around.

That's a fallible argument!
Just because something happened in the past doesn't mean crapola.
The quote you have listed says,"...broke the rules..." Not broke the law. Big difference! There is no law that prohibits Amaricans from moving state to state.
Also, if those trying to make that point think what the 'Sooners' did was 'wrong' why would they not think what illegals are doing are equally wrong & if not worse since we do have laws against entering this country & staying here w/ out going through the proper channels.
I wonder if these same priest would say we whould resort back to slavery...since that to has happened in the the 1800's.

The Roman Catholic church membership has been radically decreasing for years. Illegal aliens have tons of Catholic children, and either don't believe in birth control or are too poorly educated to know how to use it. Someone's got to fill up the collection plate, especially with the millions of dollars paid out to sexual abuse victims. Sure the church harbors them; priests have to eat, too.

The Catholic priests have a good point. Everyone came here from somewhere.
They are just trying to help other people feel more compassionate towards their fellow man by drawing this comparison.
Catholics are taught to help their fellow human beings as part of their religion, now they can be charged with a felony? Oklahoma's new laws are terrible.

I think every 'sooner' who hears that should search their soul long and hard.
Every American who DID NOT break the rules on April 22, 1889 can freely ignore it.
What do you think the 'Boomers' thought of the 'Sooners'?

What a crock! God bless the Okies for dealing with this problem properly. The Catholic priests also protect their pedophile priests, too! Screw 'em they don't pay my bills. And economic freedom is what American citizens are needing and wanting! We don't want to support any more illegals or the ones who are already here.

Those priests that hide and cover up for the illegals should be deported or jailed. "Economic freedom" at the expense of hard working Americans more like it.

It is garbage. Even if the original settlers slipped in early they were still citizens. Illegals have no rights in the US.

Gee...we used to just pull out shot guns and blow people away for stepping on our property. Think that would work now? These people will use any lame excuse they can scrounge up for their defense. That was then, this is now. It's different. We have laws and rules....abide by them......can't then leave. Real simple.
