In my experience, all Swiss-Germans (at least under the age of 50 or so) can speak High German, though many don't like to and some would rather speak English. You should have no trouble having a conversation with them, but you probably won't get every far trying to eavesdrop on them. However, some foreigners do not speak much High German or any English.
I don't go to Geneva much, but I suspect it's similar: the Swiss-French can speak German (but would rather not) and/or English, but some foreigners may only speak their own language and French. (At least the French is standard, but that won't help you, will it?) And there are a fair number of native German speakers in Geneva. (And native English speakers, for that matter.)

Switzerland is divided into 4 regions language. German, Italian, French and "romance". The German is the language as a percentage most spoken. Do not worry for the German dialect, every Swiss can speak High German with a little effort. Sometimes they are a bit lazy and prefer to speak their dialect. I agree with what is written above: many Swiss can speak English, so you will not have problems.

Switzerland has 4 languages, sure, however such a lot character locations in Switzerland have just one language. There are a couple of cantons (eg, Valais/Wallis and Fribourg/Freiburg) which might be formally bilingual however even there, the various towns and villages are one or the opposite. So for essentially the most side, humans will talk the language of the targeted road they meet on. For query #four, my children do move to tuition in German within the German side of Switzerland, one has had English considering the fact that 2d grade and the opposite French considering the fact that fifth grade. In my revel in, the reply WAS French as much as a couple of years in the past however now I'd say English. For query #five, my niece and nephew within the French side are studying best German at tuition (I suppose considering the fact that 2d or third grade). English begins round seventh grade, I suppose. For query #6, my wager might be German however I have no idea for definite. In commonplace, German audio system are extra willing to gain knowledge of overseas languages than are French audio system, however the common Swiss individual speaks three languages good.
