I received a telephone call this past May from the FOP. This was my first call and I donated the $80 got the window emblem and card. Ok, fine. Happy to do it. But they must have sold, lent, or rented their list of those who donated as since I have received calls from firemen, other police, ambulance and so many others.

I simply say I don't have the money, thanks and hang up.

How do I get off the list? Needless to say I will never donate again due to this.

FOP IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT USES THE NAME FOR SALES PURPOSES. ONLY ABOUT 20% GOES TO FOP THE REST TO SALES STAFF.

SAME HERE WITH TROOPER OF ALABAMA.

I SAY I GAVE AT THE OFFICE.

YES THEY GET LISTS AND THEN SELL THOSE LIST FOR ANOTHER PROFIT.

You've been had. As others have said here already, many of these organizations give very little of the money they collect to charity. And yes, they sold your information to other scam artists, which reputable charities never do. You should call your local police office and ask about the reputation of the org'n to which you donated. Even if they called themselves "fraternal order of police," it would be interesting to find out who they really are. If you paid with a check or credit card, there is a slim chance you could get your money back, if you report it as fraud (if it was). Then you could give the money to a charity where it would really do some good.

In the future, if you are inclined to charity, which I think is good, you should tell the people on the phone (or at the door) that you will only donate to a reputable organization that sends you comprehensive information on its location, activities, contact info and finances BEFORE you donate. If they won't do this, or they try to pressure you, hang up on them.

In the meantime, look at Charity Navigator, which is the largest comprehensive evaluator of charities in the U.S.: www.charitynavigator.org . It explains how to recognize worthwhile charities, and avoid the rest. It also gives reports on individual charities, so you can find out if they are legit.

Add your number to the national Don't Call registry.

Thank you for your generosity. You should know, however, that those people give only a very small percentage of the money collected to police organizations. They are not non-profit. The best way to donate is to give money directly to the memorial fund for the Police Department of your choice.

That is not the only reason not to donate, the organizations you think you are helping get about 2 percent and the rest goes to the telemarketers.
