Have you been into the supermarket lately? The prices for groceries are outrageous especially here in NY. I know the economy is not doing too well but dang. What do you think?

Corn is the basis for about 2/3 of everything that you buy in the supermarket. Corn starch, corn syrup and the like are more expensive now than they were 5 years ago because farmers in some states make more money selling it as bio fuel.

Amazing how something like this has to happen for people to go......"oh yeah food comes from farms"

We need to concentrate more on electricity to power cars, after all every house in American has the potential to create its own electricity to power its cars......and that would be oil free living at its best. If we built houses more efficiently with concrete walls, triple pane glass windows, CFL bulbs, On demand hot water heaters and such, we could save tons of money every year and not sacrifice quality of life at all. We would have stronger more efficient homes, and the potential to create enough power on our roofs (solar) to power our cars and our homes for decades.

I like my corn on the cob.......not in my tank ethanol is a joke

We have had some bad growing seasons with droughts and freezes that destroyed some crops. There is also the added cost of gas to deliver the products to the market. Companies have had recalls so they lost money and are now trying to pass on increases to make up for it. There are more government regulations that require more cost to manufacture and package things. The cost of feed is up for animals so meat and dairy are up in price. However farmers are still getting government subsidies to not produce which I think should be going to the food pantries where we will all have to go if the prices get much higher.

Well for one the South is in a record breaking drought, Southern farmers may loose everything... Look for prices to go higher. Also someone above pointed out the alternative fuel Ethanol is wreaking its own form of havoc.

Oil is record high. Now it costs more to both package and transport food. Also grains are high priced on the market. Probably because corn and soybeans have shot up in price now that they are being marketed to make fuel. So it costs more ot feed the animals that are our meat. Soon oil will go up more and as more farmers make more by selling our grains to fuel producers so will our food. Perhaps in another decade the government will have to get involved so all our grains aren't sold for fuel causing unstability in our society.

I cringe everytime I go and come back with less and less not to mention what I end up tossing because of recalls. Close to 3 bucks for stale bread....almost 3 for eggs set to expire in a few days.....my big deal for the week was 5 lbs of potatoes for 99 cents. Of course I haven't peeled them yet.....usually when I get a deal like this....more than 1/2 are bad. Can't even rely on soup anymore........it's insane for sure.

There are many reasons, one reason is the increased demand and use of ethanol from corn for fuel. This has increased the demand and therefore raised the price of corn. Corn and other grain crops are also used to feed animals for the production of meat.

The price of oil has really affected farmers. It takes a lot of gas to run those combines. When you increase the price at the source, everything is multiplied up the supply chain.

The weak dollar and high fuel prices are driving up the cost of food. It is not going to get better any time soon.
