Actually, not very painful, but this is a place only those artists with a lot of experience should be tattooing so be sure you go to a reputable studio.
It is really easy to blow out ink in that area and a lot of bad artists are very heavy handed. If you see any kind or random thickening or shadowing out of the lines in any of their portfolio, or very thick lines for that matter, look elsewhere.

I have a tattoo behind my right ear and it wasn't painful at all. The vibration of the tattoo machine was a little unnerving, but it wasn't bad. It's really not painful, actually it was the least painful of all 5 of my tattoos. I have long hair so my tattoo only shows when I want it to. The only problem you might have is some artists refuse to do a first tattoo on the neck. But if you already have one or more, you should be ok. Good luck!

You can always cover up a tattoo behind your ear. It's a great spot.
But yes, they hurt. It's a weird vibrating, stinging sensation. Worth it though, as is all pain you go through for a tattoo.

Lightly poke yourself with a clean pin in that spot and see how it feels. Now imagine that same feeling over and over again. I don't think the needle is so bad its the constant wiping that bothers me. My skin starts to feel almost raw. I think a great place for one is below the belt. It can be covered for work. I have three below my belly button and they weren't to bad.

get one that can be covered with a short sleeved tshirt, or a low cut top, same with trousers, so if you get a job it can not be seen.
