I was prescribed vicodin 5/500 and skelaxin 800mg. The doctor thinks I have a pinched nerve but isn't sure. My back hurts so bad that in order for me to go to sleep, I need to take 2 of my vicoden, 2 skelaxin which is a muscle relaxer, and 2 tylenol pm. I know the vicoden only has 5 mg vicoden and 500 mg tylenol, but I have to take all of that just to sleep. I start physical therapy next friday and have another doc app tomorrow. Does anyone know of a better medicine or has had bad back problems and can offer any help or advice?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an MRI prior to PT. If you go to a PT who is trained in mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT), studies have demonstrated that an experienced MDT specialist is about 90% as accurate at detecting the presense of a disc derangement (aka pinched nerve or herniated disc). We only request the MRI when the results of the exam are inconclusive...not to confirm what we already know...save yourself some money and be sure you see a PT with training in MDT. What your doctor "thinks" is irrelevant. Get an Xray, CT scan, or MRI so you know what the problem is. Take it to a good physiotherapist or orthopedic specialist and proceed from there. I have had back pain for twenty years - taking pain killers and anti-inflammatories simply masks the symptoms. Don't risk chronic back pain Get it diagnosed and treated by a specialist.

You need a MRI to rule in or out pinched nerve. Nerves are not to be messed with so I would seek the MRI before PT!

Try a chiropractor. I've been going to them for 48 yrs. and they have done wonders for my back pain. Don't just pick one out of the phone book. Get recommendations from friends or family. Most insurance companies cover chiropractic treatment.
