The 40GB PS3 can't play PS1 and PS2 games like the 20GB, 60GB, 80GB PS3's can. The 20GB and 60GB PS3's have the best backward compatibility because ithey have the Emotion Engine in them.
The 80GB PS3 can't play as many PS2 games because it uses software to be backward compatible and doesn't have the Emotion Engine chip that allows it to be compatible with nearly all PS1 and PS2 games.

no not at all only the 60gb and the 80gb can but the 80gb bc is limited to around 80% while the 60 is 100%
