The dog who made the biggest impact on my life also ended up being with me the shortest time. Her name was Madelaine, and she was a Katrina dog.
We adopted her last February after I had spent a month going to the shelter and trying to interact with her. She was probably only around six months old when the hurricane hit, and was judged a street dog, or a dog who was born and lived on the streets her whole life. It must have been terrifying for her.
Because of her lack of socialization, and no real contact with humans, she did very poorly in the shelter, and no one was interested. She would cower in a corner and keep her back to whoever was in the room.
We brought her home and she hid in my dining room under the table for about a week. She didn't eat that whole time.
It took us literally months to get her to trust us even a little, and then she would only really come to me. She did enjoy her new yard and all her friends (four-legged). After about ten months, she was finally starting to be a dog. She would let me touch her anywhere, and would come to my husband (if he had food).
When we brought her to the vet for her annuals, we discovered that she had had heartworm the whole time, and probably got it in New Orleans. She was already late stage two.
She died three days after her injections, from a massive stroke. My vet was so shocked he went online that night to try to find the answer for this healthy dog dying so suddenly, and discovered too late that Katrina dogs were dropping like flies, after heartworm treatments, from stress.
She changed our lives in that short time, she was such a sweet and gentle dog, and we now make sure we adopt the shelter dogs that no one else looks at, so they can have at least one year of real joy and love, and hopefully, many more years after that.

My Pomerainian made the biggest impact in my life. I got her when I was in the 6th grade for my big Christmas gift. I had begged my parents for a small puppy that would stay small so she could sleep with me, and I could take her everywhere with me. She was my bestfriend, I look back and think what would I have done with out her... She was there with me all those night my parents fought and she'd lick my face as I'd cry myself to sleep, because my family was falling apart, finally my parents separated my junior year, she was by my side everynight when I'd think how my life is changing, then my parents divorced right after I graduated high school, but then they dated each other off and on, well I was working, and since they were dating, my dad had basically moved into my mom's house, so that left me and Akey (my pom.)
living by ourselves. She was my bestfriend, a little over a year later, I found a great guy, who became my husband so we took Akey, and my new Chihuahua when we moved, and at the age of 10 she passed away this past March, I'm still not over it, I feel like I lost a child, she was my bestfriend, she was there all those nights to wipe the tears away, and now she's gone, but I know I'll see her again some day, and I can't wait.
Here's a picture of her

My parents got my sister and I a black lab - Casey, when I was about 3 years old. I had this dog until my first year of COLLEGE!
We also had him euthanized - he had numerous tumors on his belly, couldn't eat, etc. He was 16 years old.
He was the best dog EVER. Loyal, sweet, everything a lab should be.
He could really understand what you were saying and when you looked at him it was like he was talking back to you. Anyone who has had a lab knows those eyes!
I can only hope that I get as much life and enjoyment out of my current two dogs that I got out of Casey.

Wow, what a wonderful question. My dog Rusty left the biggest impact on my life. She was the GREATEST dog!!! Extremely loyal, protective, and affectionate. When
I was sad she was always there to lick my tears away. When I was sick in the hospital for weeks at a time and came home, she literally attacked me with joy and affection.
When I came home from work in the evenings she would actually be smiling and wagging her tail like crazy when I was coming up the steps. I had her for about 14 years. She was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in December 2005 and had to be put to rest in Jan. 2006. Not only do I miss her but, my entire family does. Boy,
I could go on and on about stories of the things she used to do but, I get sad. I like to remember the happy times. She was a mutt, very cute and knew it, especially when she went to the groomers. She would always walk out with her little bows or scarf and have a different step them when she went in. Just like us women do, she loved to be pampered. I had her cremated, I only hope to be able to get another dog one day that could be half the dog the Rusty was. Mommy always misses you :)

I can say that all dogs I had in my life had an impact on me, I can't say which one had the strongest. I loved them all and when they left me, there have been five over the last thirty years, then it was always hard for me to say good-bye to them and each of them I miss, but I can feel their presence still in my heard. They were very personal and great characters, each of them in their way. Now I live with two dogs and they are also very special. I can't imagine that I could have been without my dogs all over the years and I only can say that I appreciate having had them and still have such giving friends...

It was Border Collie my parent got for my youngest brother . He was 3 , I was 8 . That was the smartest and most well behaved dog I've known . He passed when I was 19 and it toke me a couple years before I could get close to another dog . You just don't realize how deep the attachment goes .

In my lifetime I think that every dog I have had has made an impact one way or another. As a teen my dogs taught me unconditional love and what that means. As I got older and have dogs of my own they have taught me responsibility and the meaning to care and love something that wants nothing in return but your time and attention. They depend on you being you that's all.

My current dog: Mack
In 8 months he's shown me more about myself and how I relate to the universe than any dog I've ever had. He challenges me to remain calm and patient on a daily basis and refuses to allow me to vegetate on the couch. He's like that annoying teacher from middle school who wouldn't accept that a d was your best work and made you come in after school everyday till you had a c. He pushes me to learn as much as I can and figure out ways to apply it.

It would be between my yellow lab, Rudy and my male boxer, Squirt.
I bought Rudy out of a litter of 12 other labs. I chose her because she had gotten her head stuck in a mayonnaise jar, and I just knew that any dog who could do that would make life more interesting. I chose my china pattern because it was called. "Wentworth" which was Rudy's last name. I lost her to a combination of dysplasia/blindness/deafness.
Squirt was the last puppy in his litter. He was a tank of a dog-he would plow through any obstacle. He once clawed through a door to get to me, and he also tore down a steel crate to get to me, as well. He grew up living in the city, but then we moved to the country. He loved it, but our neighbors didn't like him and they poisoned him. He died on my daughter's first birthday, which was three years ago, and I still cry for him. He was my boy.
There've been so many terrific dogs in my life, I have been blessed. It is hard to single out one or two.
