I was planning on buying a Springfield XD 4" 9mm, but at the range the other day I was given the advice to get a 40 cal XD and switch out the barrel to shoot 9mm. I can see how the versatility would be nice to have (right?), but I'm not that experienced with gun repair and wanted to see what the community's opinion is on the matter. So... what do you all think?

No, buy a 40 cal and stay with a 40 cal.... the 40 has better stopping power.... no reason to take a 9mm over a 40 cal..... and why buy one and switch parts..... too much of a hassle...

Well great choice of firearm. I own two XDs one is 4" 9mm and one is the Tactical .45ACP.
I can honestly say I never heard of that before. Switching barrels seems a little dangerous as a .40 caliber barrel is only made for a .40 caliber bullet. I am not well versed in gun repair myself but I do not think I would try that.

Added- 9mm is just fine. It is a smoother round in line of recoil and cheaper to shoot. There are police departments in the Chicagoland area that still use 9mm. Not even +p ammo. If you have a chance to shoot both a 9 and 40 take it. You will be able to make the choice better. All I know is that my first handgun was a .40 and it caused a lot of pain in my arm. I prefer .45acp and 9mm.

Whoa, I can see where you can run into some problems with this setup. Firts of all, with the Glock .40 S&W's and the .357 Sigs, you can do this, because the .357 Sig is nothing more than a .40 S&W case neckecked down to accept .357 projectiles.I was told that the .40 Glock mags will work with .357 Sig rounds.

With the difference between the 9mm and .40 cases and demensions, you cannot use the same mags, and the ectractor and ejectors will not be the same for these two rounds.

If you are looking into this stay with a 40S&W and 357 SIG most firearm companys have this firearm and the same mags are used most of the time......
If you go the way of 9 and 40 different barrels and different mags...So why not go with 2 firearms then?......

Buy either the XD9 or XD40. People try to do the same with the OEM Glock line and it's a hassle with the lone exception of the .40Auto/.357Auto conversion.

Not only do the firearms have different barrles but interal parts that would have to be changed out. Buy one or the other or both.

I really fail to see exactly what the hassle would be in swapping barrels. If it's something you feel you would use, then do it!
