that has propagated so fiercely because individuals who didn't believe would be killed or cast out of the group and not survive? I am simply amazed at the percentage of people that have a belief in god or a higher power, when there is absolutely no reason to believe this in terms of day to day survival needs of shelter, food, water, etc. Any ideas???

I was raised in a christian environment, but even as a child I always seemed to kind of wonder why all this emphasis on "god", I never found myself praying either which of course is a common practice, it seems as though my brain is simply wired in a way that just can't believe in this way, I've been assuming there was something wrong with everyone else...maybe something is wrong with me?

Perfect!! What Andy just said!!!
The belief of a Higher Power was the ONLY way I would accept "god" in my life...I don't need a book, a sip of wine or any other rituals to "believe"

I would think just the opposite, sort of a genetic mental defect in my brain if I didn't want to know my origin, how, why and where I came from. I began to question when I was 6. I have a twin and she is totally opposite. Who knows maybe you both learned the answers to these many, many life times and it's just a break for you guys or either earned this life of 'just go with the flow" Maybe everyone is searching for what you have learned already.

I would say that nurture plays a pre-dominant role but that nature comes into play also.
I wouldn't call it a "defect", I would just called it a genetic variation.
As long as theists aren't bothering you, just leave them be. And don't hold the bad behavior of some theists against ALL thiests.
Live & let live.

The spiritual senses, are an advantage to have over just relying on the senses, used to deal with the material world. Science has its limitations, just like religion does. You can sharpen your spiritual senses, dulled by our overly materialistic world, so that you will connect better with the spiritual realm, and the universal spirit, that holds the universe together as one. Meditate, do mind-body exercise, eat healthy, and don't over indulge, and you will get more sensitive spiritually.

It might have something to do with that, but more likely there are so many believers because children are forced to believe it and go to church at a young age, so they never question it.

Read Dawkins, he seems to be at the forefront of scholarship on this line of thinking.
Lol, don't thank me yet. I believe in God whole heartedly, but it's always good to know what others are thinking. I think Dawkins is nuts, but he'd say the same about me.
