During a recent publicity outing, Jennifer sneaked off to visit a fortune teller of some local repute. In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news. "There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just be blunt: Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year."

Visibly shaken, Jennifer stared at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know. She met the fortune teller's gaze, steadied her voice, and asked her question.

"Will I be acquitted?"

That's a great question - "Will I be acquitted?"
It reminds me of the time I went to a Palm Reader many years ago. After looking over my hand and giving me "universal" details, she asked if I had any questions.
I said, "Will I ever go to jail?"
She about stroked out. Her eyes got real wide and her face went pale. It was all I could do to keep from laughing.
She finally said, "No!"
But I have always wondered what she was thinking.
Then she says, and this is on the level - "Next time you come bring me a hard-boiled egg wrapped in a 20-dollar bill."
I didn't go back. Couldn't find a hard-boiled egg.

Fake The techniques are well established, they are called 'Cold Reading', 'Barnum Statements' and Hit counting. Cold reading uses a combination of body-language and questions disguised as statements - people don't realise just how much information they are giving away. Barnum statements are statements that sound as if they are very specific, but in fact are general and could be applied to a lot of situations. Hit counting lets the teller play a game of 'twenty questions', following up any lead that gets a positive response from the sitter, and relies on the sitter forgetting all the wrong guesses and only counting those that seemed to make a hit or connection. I once gave such a reading to a group of my students, and most said it was uncanny, and applied to them very precisely. But I had in fact given them all exactly the same reading!

No. The fortune teller must warn the husband and go to the police if it happens.
