They arent "never damaged", in fact they are rarely undamaged. The flight recorders are made of very tough materials to prevent physical damage but the internal components are also given shielding from the shock of impact. Most of the time the recordings on the tapes they contain must be spliced and examined very carefully to get any readable data off them.
The aircraft itself can't be made to be unbreakable. The break up of the aircraft during an impact absorbs much of the shock that would otherwise be absorbed by passengers bodies. In this case injuries would be much more severe and life threatening than if the aircraft crumpled around them instead. Its much the same principle as applies to cars and any other form of transport. The passegners are safer when the frame is designed with "crumple zones" and not made to be unbreakable.

Blackboxes are not impervious to damage. Though resistant to damage they are sometimes damaged in aircraft accidents. The same materials used to manufacture a Blackbox are used in the manufacture of aircraft. If the entire aircraft were manufactured to the same requirements, its cost would be prohibitive, and as others have mentioned, it would be too heavy to fly using today's engine technology.

That was funny the first 347 times, but it is getting old, now.
The black box is a small thing, and can be made of heavy materials. If the whole airplane were made of the same materials, it would be far, far too heavy to fly.

I don't think a huge flying box made of crash resistant material be too aerodynamic.

What an idiot. Feel free to diss me for this, but this wasn't even clever the first hundred times it was asked.
