My brother is proposing to his girlfriend of 3 years!
Now as a good sister I have to keep it on the low.
I already got him his birthday present which will be worth every penny of the $4,000 I spent on him, but now I have to think of what to get his soon to be fiance and him as a engagement present.
Any Ideas Guys?

I know traditionally you only get the bride and groom a wedding gift, but I want to go outside of the box because he is my only brother and sibling.

FYI-PG-
I do have class, and it is people like you that are jealous that you are not able to give gifts as such. I shared that small detail so realize I have already spent alot, and do not mind spending more just perhaps on a smaller budget.

Everyone else is saying it's not traditional to give engagement presents...but where I am from it is. Maybe this is a west coast/east coast thing? Anyhow, my favorite engagement gifts that I recieved were a bottle of my favorite and expensive perfume, and a mary kay satin hands kit. Or you could ask your brother what she would like. Other ideas: a spa night (our local spa offers bridal packages) or perhaps a lovely set of pearls?
I look at engagement presents as a "I'm excited you will be part of my family" gift.
ANother idea, you could throw them an engagement party. This would be a nice gift. Good luck!

If you have the money to spend on your brother, good for you. Did you tell us how much you spent on his birthday so we'd know that money is not really an issue for this gift? If that's the reason, and you're looking to drop some major dough on the engagement gift, why not offer to pay for the wedding or reception or honeymoon, or give them a check to help pay for it?

You could give them an engagement party

You could wait until they register and buy several place settings of their china/crystal.

I hope she's not on YA weddings right now!!

Hi there.

I'm not quite sure why you felt the need to broadcast how much you'd spent on him, but whatever. OK So you already got him a birthday present and are now looking for an engagement present.

My recommendation would be a trip to the manicurist for the bride (after all, you want the hands sporting the ring to look as lovely as the bride to be!) and maybe host an engagement party if it's OK with your brother!

Congratulations on the future sister-in-law! :-) How exciting!

Don't know if you want to go higher or lower than the $4,000. If you are going high, maybe a car is in order (or save that for the wedding). On a smaller scale, a tasteful antique or piece of art would be nice (especially if you can get something signifying a special place to them like the place they got engaged). You could get them something practical like a new frig or washer and dryer if they have a house (typical things that need to be replaced but people put off). If you offer to pay for the photographer or food for the wedding (usually one of the largest expenses), that would be much appreciated I'm sure. If you want to do something else for the wedding, maybe getting a horse carriage or limo for them to ride to the reception in. I also think a honeymoon gift certificate would be nice.

I wouldn't do the string of pearls or other jewelry thing, that is specifically for the bride and she may have a piece of family jewelry and/or your brother may buy it for her.

You don't have to get them an engagement gift. Save the money and buy them a nice wedding present. My fiance and I got a couple cards but no engagement presents. Presents are normally given for a wedding.

Maria:
Get over yourself. Who in the world broadcasts how much they spent on a birthday gift....and why does that have anything to do with your question?

Why didn't you simply post....."I am so excited for my brother and soon to be sister-in-law...they are getting engaged! I know it's not traditional, but I want to get them a gift....any suggestions?"

You would have received a lot more positive ideas if you had posted your question like that. It is relevant to be in the wedding section, but no one cares how much you spent on your brother's birthday gift!! Give me a break.

So......why not get them a nice card and a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant?

A bottle of wine, nice wine glasses, wine accessories.

A nice momento with the date of their engagement on it is something really nice for the occasion...you can check out this web-site for some ideas, I have purchased gifts for girls on here before and they have very nice things for very reasonable prices. I personally always loved personalized gifts, which I guess is why I love this site so much. I think it it worth to check it out. If you have a chance, drop me an e-mail (asunkist1@yahoo.com) and let me know how this site worked for you. Good luck. Hope this helps!!!!!

Aw that's so sweet of you! Who cares if it's not "traditional" to get them an engagement gift?! It's your family, your money, your decision!

I'd get them a trip to a couple's spa, that way they can relax and enjoy each other's company....since we all know planning a wedding can be very stressful!

Well if you would to give them a gift, maybe wait and talk to her about her plans for the wedding, and get them something special for their wedding, or if you wan tto spend 4000 dollars give them their honeymoon, or give them a gift certificate to a travel company so they can choose a honeymoon

usually you don't get engagement gifts. Just give them a nice bottle of wine and a congrats card....something like that.
