This is a good question and a large proportion of the answerers haven't understood it properly. Far too many people seem to be under the impression that "atheists must believe in something so their life is just as much based on faith as a religious person's". Your question helps to show that this is a fallacy.

If an atheist makes "the science behind a computer" a god and starts worshipping it (I assume that's what you mean by believe) then they are no longer an atheist because they now have a god.
If an atheist believes that there is science involved in developing and producing a computer then they are right.
By the way, atheists can believe things, they just do not believe in the existence of gods.
However to get back to the former atheist who is worshipping his computer, if he develops his beliefs into a doctrine and encourages others to join in his beliefs then yes, he probably will have a religion.

"I am an atheist and of course I don't think so, but some people do."

You name me one. I mean, I could tell you what happens when the keyboard contoller issues a type 9 interrupt, but do I think computer technology is a religion? Not really. Christianity is my religion.

How come? I am prepared to bet there are not too many atheists who do not BELIEVE materialim to be a correct depiction of the universe. Not that it can be proved true of course. It's a presupposition.

Some Christian would think that to believe in something has to be equated to religion, but there is much to believe in that has nothing to do with religion.
Science scares religious people. It always has since the beginning of Christianity when people who made scientific discoveries were killed for discovering that the sun was the center of the earth or that the moon was a plant-type object with mountains and valleys.
For some reason they think if the bible is proven to just be stories it means they live a lie. Well, it could be that they need to look to another source to really understand "God."
It has always been weird to me that findings must be kept secret least they scare the religious people...very sad. Is it because religion is how the masses are controlled and to lose this leverage would mean a loss of control over the people? The "puppet-masters" behind the pulpit have a lot of control over people if you look at it...they even tell their congregations who to vote for, who to hate, who to give 10% of their income to...
People can be good moral citizens without religion. They would probably do it in a more healthy way too, because the reasons for being good could be deeper than...its a sin...god will send you to hell. Actual reasons are more effective in helping people grow to be intelligent moral humans.

this question is a responce to the earlier atheism is a religion one isn't it.
like i said in that responce if the words used have no fixed peramitas they can be used to call anything a belief even your computer belief (lol all hale mighty DELL)
and when the use of the word such as religion has been relaxed to include belief systems such as buddhism which is very much in line with atheistic and scientific theories on quite a few areas one being observable proof then the door is open for science or atheism to be classed as a religion even though it is not, but the word faith in buddhism for instance is used in a different way to say christianity, as in a christian has faith that god exists even though this god can not be proven a buddhist has faith in the teachings becouse of the observable benafitthey have seen or heard of via reliable sources, just as (i will presume here) you have faith that your computer will turn on when it is brand new (THE ALMIGHTY DELL)you havent seen it turn on but you know it should as the company says it should.

ahh but atheists have reasons for their 'beliefs' (which really are not beliefs, so you could say you have 'faith' in facts, but that is an expression) unlike theists. hmm ,we do not worship a computer and do what it says with out consideration. also, there is no doubt that computers exsist (in less life is one big dream and in which i am talking to myself, and your are talking to yourself and i am indeed a figment of your imagination along with everything which really compliments the human minds ability.) whereas 'is there a God' is a controversial issue. also comuters have most certainly not been personificated unlike God. God has emotions, of wrath and hate so we can trust his decisions almost, less than a computer with nothing to effect his judgements. i think that religion is less pheasable in modern society as it was written a long time ago with no evidence, and most feel we are in a new 'era' of technology so we have no time for primitive consideerations. however, it is something to ponder about.

ps.what made you turn from agnostic to atheist?

You guys are being rude, I'm pretty sure this person is an atheist.

However, as you have pointed out, no, it does not make the belief about the computer a religion.

For hundreds of years, human beings have stated that their god become in the back of what they did no longer understand -- existence, lightning, stars, earthquakes, the commencing place of existence, the worldwide or the universe, etc. Positing a god to supposedly answer a query solves no longer something. It only stops you from asking greater questions. Your important good judgment is only the argument from layout. We now understand how the approach of evolution creates the visual attraction of layout. investigate the 1st 2 hyperlinks. Sorry, yet faith in an historic e book of myths does not signify data. i do no longer understand why each and every guy or woman might have faith something from the Bible. It become written via primitive adult adult males who believed that the Earth become the middle of the universe, and it become flat and coated via a huge solid dome observed as the firmament. -

Absolutely. Worship the Almighty Motherboard and tithe 10% of your income to Toshiba, or you'll be sentenced to being a glitchy, virus ridden program for all eternity.
