My student dentist zapped me three times with the x-ray machine before remembering to give me that protective pad. What are the chances I'm going to get cancer or become sterile after this malpractice? Are today's high tech x-ray machines less likely to cause health problems?

radiation exposure in dental radiographs is so minimal these days that you haven't much to worry about. If your student dentist takes about 100 more with no protection, then I would start getting upset. We learned that 18 of those xrays is equal to about 1-3 days of normal radiation you would get from the sun (depending on where you live).
You will not be a mutant any time soon!

I think that your chances of getting cancer from 3 x-rays is pretty slim. I think that the biggest risk to developing anything from an x-ray machine would be for the technition because they are around the radiation particles all the time.

Your student Dentist? Do you mean your actual Dentist who is a student?
Anyway--Your fine the amount of Radiation is like the one person said Minimal compared to cell phone, TV or even the microwave.

Hold your cell phone and text a friend for 3 minutes. You got the same amount of radiation.

So I would worry more about your cell phone over those few shots from the dentist.

Put your phone under a radiation detector. You won't want to hold it again. Look on YouTube, there are even videos of people doing it to their phone to show how radioactive they really are.

DO NOT BE OVERLY CONCERNED. YOU WILL BE FINE. I'M SURE THIS DENTAL STUDENT'S SUPERVISORS REPRIMANTED HIM, AND THIS FOIBLE HE'S UNLIKELY TO REPEAT AGAIN. ALL HAVE TO LEARN SOMEWHERE.
