'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

I love this quote!
Those were the good o' days when you can say pro-American things without being called a racist. Political correctness has taken over!

It's weird how people will say "I'm an African American, an Italian American etc, etc & they were born and raised here." If you want to add the other country go back and live there for a while so at least you have some knowledge of the country you're claiming birthright to. Maybe you'll want to stay & help their economy. Make a choice. What are you?
We're all immigrants, except the Native Americans, who were run off their own land. Many tribes believed that the land should not be owned by anyone: it was for all people to enjoy. Sadly, they were outnumbered by immigrants who seized a great deal of land through homesteading.

I always wondered what the word "assimilate" meant. I mean the last time i heard this was when i was around 15 and saw a star trek episode. and based on what you say we should all kick out and go after African americans, native americans and anyone else that is something aside from also being american. all I have to say is whatever your on you need to lay off it. if we all lived like you wished everyone to live we would have no diversity and i think we would be called robots.

What the heck is wrong with that first answerer? That was a rude and irrelevant comment.
Anyway...yes, they are great words. Something for immigrants to live by.
Although, I must say, today the USA does have a dual-citizenship system. Regardless, I understand the crisis here with illegal immigrants, not American at all, coming here and making our money without paying taxes on it, and sending it back home.
We need them, if they plan on working here, to assimilate and become American first. They care not for our traditional values or laws. It really ticks me off, as it ticks off any good American.

well aren't many Americans will say things like: "My grandparents are Italian that's why I cook so well" or "I am of Irish decent that's why I have such beautiful hair" - this country is a melting pot and we'll never be all the same, all purely American. I think people should speak English and accept the culture. I don't think they should agree with or love everything about this country as no one does but I think they should assimilate as much as possible with the general population.

any immigrant is entitled to a drivers license, your job, and shall be allowed to live in your home where you will care and provide for the needs of him and his family. You are also required to learn Spanish to communicate with him.
