This may seem like an ignorant question, but what exactly does the US Navy do? How often do they fight in battle, and if possible how long does one have to enlist?

What is the major difference between the US airforce and the US Navy?

What does the US Navy do? They project US sea power across the globe. They deliver munitions, supplies, and men of all branches of the US military to various theaters of operations. The hold the best chance for the US' "first strike" nuclear capability. They keep the sea lanes open. They deliver steel on target to those who are belligerent to the US and those who jeopardize freedom and democracy.

What's the difference between the US Navy and the US Air Force? Is this a trick question? (Surely you can't be THAT simple minded as to not know the difference between an air force and a navy, can you?) Navies project sea power (cruisers, battleships, destroyers, submarines, aircraft carriers, etc...), air forces project air power (fighters. bombers, etc...) When was the last time you heard of an air force submarine?

The mission of the Navy is to:
1. Secure the safe use of the sea for the US and its allies
2. In wartime, to deny use of the sea to the enemy
3. Project power ashore (in the form of missiles, Marines, and aircraft attacks)
4. To save any life imperiled on the sea
5. To develop new weapons, strategies and tactics.
6. To deter hostile actions against the United States and her allies.

The Navy is different from the Air Force in a lot of ways--focus of its activities, the fact that the Navy has more air craft than the Air Force, the fact that the Navy has older traditions than the Air Force...the fact that Navy dress uniforms don't look like greyhound bus driver uniforms...

1. Protect sea lanes (to safeguard merchant shipping)
2. Protect coastal waters
3. Protect against amphibious invasion
4. Transport land troops and supplies
5. Project air power where needed (i.e., aircraft carriers do this)
6. Secretly position nuclear launch facilities (submarines) around the world as a deterrent to nuclear war or other attack.

That's all I can think of, but they are one of the more important services. We could probably do with just an Army and a Navy and none of the other services. The Navy could cover the air part.

So you were on the bridge when it happened? Who knows how i went down. Just because there is not a word for word account in the article doesn't mean it was the US Navy's fault. Someone COULD have made an error on the tanker. You and I were not there that's why the NAVY will do an investigation. Guess sitting at your keyboard makes you qualified to know how the bridge of a destroyer is run?

What Does The Navy Do

The US navy is an extention of the United States foreign policy.
When Americans or our allies are threatened anywhere in the world, the question the president ask is "where are the carriers"?
A single American carrier group has more fire power than the pacific fleet did in WWII.
They recently have engaged pirates in the waters off Somalia. Before the collapse of the soviet union, they kept a watch full eye on their navy.
I think enlistments are 2-4 and 6 years, that's what they were when my bro in law was in.

As for enlistment, it ranges between 4-6 years active, and an additional 2-4 inactive reserves. There was a program that allowed a 15 month enlistment after completion of school, but as soon as the 15 months are up you went reserves. You will have to talk to a recruiter, programs change. As for what the Navy does? Carriers launch planes for air support, destroyers launch tomahawks to hit targets thousands of miles away, frigates hunt sub's, and cruisers fall somewhere between destroyers and frigates. Sea battles are almost a thing of the past, so its been a while since ones been fought. Good choice if you decide to join, lots of travel and seeing foreign countries.

Umm.. there's all sorts of jobs in the US Navy. They deploy all over the world to do peacekeeping missions, Seabees build things, the corpsmen deploy for medical missions, ships defend international waters and provide air support. Individual soldiers can be deployed on IA missions where they act in support of other units wherever they're needed from Cuba to Iraq. Historically, Navy ships have been used to evacuate people from harm's way, deliver fresh water after natural disaster.. etc.
The shortest enlistment period is an obligation of 8 years. It can be 3-4 active and then 4 inactive reserve during which you can be called up to active duty if needed.

Oh man the Navty does a hell of alot of things. Now they arent really a "direct combat" force (other than the Marine Corps. Navy SEALS, Fighter pilots, etc.) but they do alot of support missions and serve as a huge powerhouse to the U.S. war effort. Anything from transporting troops and equipment anywhere around the world to being the first to coordinate an attack plan, set up an invasion force, plot supply lines, and destroy anything from miles away. If you serve on a battleship your gonna have some fun. Hearing those missels launch or cannons fire oughta give you a rush. Most enlisted jobs wont put you in direct danger or anywhere in the front lines, but if you want to go and fight, you got the Marines (who are a division of the Navy) SEALS (Special Forces baby!) EOD (simply, guys who blow stuff up) Fighter Pilot (can you say, TOPGUN?!!) and a whole lot of other stuff that i cant even remember. If your intrested in joining you can talk to a recruiter (as always lol) or do your own research.

The modern US navy is the most powerful inthe world. With the carrier fleets, we are able to provide a platform for superior air power virtually anywhere in the world. If you can control the air, you can do pretty much what you want to do on the ground as far as troop deployment.
They also offer a nuclear option with the stealthy subs that can park off a coast and fire missiles to inland targets that can reach any spot on the planet.
They also transport men and materials to where ever they are needed on the ground.
