If whipping the tail - then they are angry- a dog with the same action would be considered happy

Twitching towards the top or the end of the tail is like a warning

If they lay slightly sideways they are ready to attack.

Okay I have seven cats and I am also a pet groomer, Cats usually move their tail either when they are aggitated and when in a play ful mood, If you are grooming the cat while tail is twitching becareful it's getting ready to nail you. The other way to know if it is getting playful is usaully it will purr or rub up too you wanting some love. Tail twitching can go either way happy or mad it is a sign of emotion in cats

This is just what my cat is....

Just the tip- hunting mode. He's reading to play or punce on something

Whole tail slowly - He's just happy

Whole tail fast - He's irritated about something

Sometimes a cat's tail just moves, but it will usually move when they are walking. Cats use their tail mainly for balance, so you can't usually read as much into their emotions as you can with dogs.

If it's gently waving, that's usually contentment. If it's twitching, the kitty is irritated. If lashing, angry and about to do some damage.
