What is a Lexus project?
The IS is the little, bitty one. It's like a dressed up Escort. Very small but nice amenities.
ES is a dressed up Camry or Avalon.
GS is the size of like a Maxima, but really, really nice. A little small still for my taste and my big dogs.
LS is the big daddy of them all. Incredible experience, roomy enough, and great toys.

I assume you are asking about a vehicle to modify.
First off, Lexus is more focused on luxury, refinement and reliability, not performance. so it might be easier to start off with a car focused on performance, such as the BMW M3 or Lancer Evolution.
If you are set on modifying a Lexus I think the IS300 or SC300 equipped with a manual transmission would be a great choice. Since both of those cars use the same motor as the non-turbo Toyota Supra, it is possible to perform an engine swap and install the Supra Turbo engine into the IS300 or SC300.
A twin turbo IS300 or SC300 would be very fast and retain all of the luxury features that Lexus is known for.

If you mean a project to add performance, the IS is a good lexus to start on, as it is the "entry level" if you will, and has good performance. However, Lexus' true sports model is the SC 430, which has a V8 and is a power hardtop convertible.
