Cats of either sex spray as a method of marking territory, and it's usually a cry for help. Generally they don't begin spraying simply because they have reached sexual maturity. Normally, they will only resort to this behaviour if they feel very insecure or that their territory is under threat. (The introduction of another animal or illness are usually the main cause). Neutered and spayed cats are considered to be less territorial, which is why they are less likely to spray, but if they're feeling very unhappy or anxious they will still do it.

Vet costs vary from area to area, so call a few local ones to find out what their costs are. If you are on housing benefit, then you may be entitled to free treatment from the PDSA. Other charities who often help out with the cost of spaying/neutering or other veterinary bills are; Cat Protection League, Blue Cross or the Celia Hammond Cat Trust. It's worth checking to see if any of those have branches in your location.

Hope this helps.

If you neuter the boy before he gets in the habit of spraying, chances are very good he won't spray.

Keep in mind that this isn't accounting for any traumas or illnesses. But even then, he could be broken of it since he has no real urge to mark territory.

You may want to ask your vet about the charges: Our kitties were fixed about 3 years ago, and I daresay there is some variation with the locale.

Good luck!

All males have the ability. Not all will bother, but most do. Males will still spray once neutered but it won't be smelly.

Price will vary, so shop around. Some vets will offer reductions to people on benefits and RSPCA and PDSA will help towards the cost too if you would find it hard to pay.

I have 6 cats. Five males and one female. All have been neutered and spayed. None of them have ever sprayed.

However, someone I know has a spayed female that sprays...
So I guess its still possible for them to spray, but less likely.

EDIT:
I can tell you that there is a HUGE chance of him spraying if you DONT have him neutered.
Prices are different in areas, but its typically alot less exspensive to have the males fixed. Here, it runs around 50.00-70.00 $
