We have had the kitten for 24 hoursand won't use the restroom. We have tried the litter box but she likes to try to eat the litter. We have tried letting her go outside but she climbs up our legs. How do we get her to use the litter box without eating the litter?

use a damp warm washcloth to wipe her private parts. This is how mother cats stimulate the kittens to go. She MUST go to the bathroom. Once she goes then worry about litter training. Right now the most important thing is that she goes potty at all.

Kittens will naturally play in their litter and usually don't really eat much. Make sure it is small enough for her to climb in and out of. Place her in the box and show her how to scratch. Also if you see her not going in the box immediately place her in the box. Do not punish her at all...it could lead to litter box misuse. 5 weeks old is too young to be away from mom as she usually shows the kittens how it is done and also cleans up the kittens when they go to the bathroom. Also other siblings who are quicker to understand show slower learners.

I would also make sure she is able to go by herself. As she is so young the mother would usually stimulate the kitten to use the restroom by licking thier bums. I would recomend using a cotton ball or soft washcloth soaked in warm (not hot) water and gently rub the kittens bum to stimulate going to the bathroom. (this mimicks what the mother would do) If the kitten continues not to go to the bathroom at all I would call the vet and see what they suggest.

I was always told to make sure that the cat litter box was not right beside where the are eating. I have had to have the food, water and cat box in the kitchen before...but my vet did advise me to try Cat Attract....The cat attract has on the back of the container said,"Freshly filled litter box with medium size particle, non-scented scoopable litter...I bought this from my vet in Missouri.i know that it is also on the internet, www.preciouscat.com. Cat's and kitten's sometimes don't like the cat litter that we like because it smells good to us...they like the more outside kind of smells...i have read also mix outside dirt with the cat litter..

Keep in mind that this is a baby- barely weaned, if that. She may need more than 24 hours to learn about a litter box.

Put her in the box, and take one of her paws and use it to scratch the litter. She'll get the idea eventually. If she has trouble getting in a 'big-kitty' box, try using a painter's tray so she won't be so intimidated: That's what I had to do with my latest pair.

Good luck!

it should come natural to them, give her a little privacy, but put it in a corner away from people and keep putting her in the litter box.
