If an MD is licensed in another state--say NJ or NY--and he comes to VA, MD, or DE, for example, would he be able to practice? Does this doctor need to sit for licensing exams in new state? Also, if he works at a center that has other doctors who are licensed in correct state, does that count for him?

A doctor must be licensed in any state where he practices medicine. He would not be covered by his partners' licenses.

No, he cannot practice, cannot see patients, cannot write prescriptions to be filled in that state where he is not licensed. Most states will accept national board exams (except CA and FL). Working at a center where other MD's are licensed won't help.

You have to be licensed in each state in which you want to practice. Except for residents, I think. Not sure what the rule is for them, but they have to be supervised.

No exams, just a pile of paperwork and a hefty fee. Then you get to wait a few months.

CA and FL make you take an exam if you've been out of residency for a period of time (maybe 10 yrs) I've not looked into it because I don't plan on practicing in either of those states.

MD license is based on National Board tests after residency, and almost all states have reciprocity, so you apply for a license in your new state based on the license in your old state and it is usually approved, whenever the committee meets, which may not be for months however.

Normally a doctor has to apply for licensure through reciprocity but doesn't have to sit for exams. It can take several months to get the new license.
